Placerville is wonderful because of it's rich history as a gold mining town, and the El Dorado Historical museum will take you back in time for just a bit. Juxtapose this against the new, fresh modern downtown, and you have a recipe for a wonderful city! Fun, education, and richness! (Free! Last I checked!)

Very small museum, but if you're interested in the gold rush, it's worth the stop. Located right on the grounds of the County Fair with easy access on Placerville Drive. Ask about El Dorado Western Railroad--the narrow gauge railroad "train" that runs on Sundays--every other Sunday right across our street!

When you’re ready to explore a little further, drive to the El Dorado County Historical Museum to see how Placerville came to be. If you’re a history buff, you will love all the displays on life during the Gold Rush. We highly recommend taking a tour with a docent because they will make the museum come alive with a whole new level of insight and stories. Everyone at the museum is friendly, very proud to be a part of Placerville, and will probably give you some great insight on where to go during the rest of your stay in Placerville.

Great place to see some of the history of the Placerville area. Also has a public research library available.
