These spectacular cliffs giving wonderful views of Edinburgh are a result of a geological fault. Modern geology started here as James Hutton observed the rock layers. A plaque at the site notes this.

Holyrood park is walking distance from the flat, just past the Palace at the bottom of the Royal Mile. The park is a large area of steep rocky crags originally formed by volcanic activity. There are several trails you can walk along through the park - alongside the road is an easy walk and you get views of the crags (cliffs) above you. Or there are trails which take you up to the top of the crags, which can be slippery in winter but are worth the effort!
