This is a must do for most people. I have enjoyed riding this old railroad bed with all four of my boys and when I was younger we would do 18 miles. There are many people who will walk parts of the trail instead of biking. The trail is very scenic and has smooth, level ground perfect for biking or walking. Amazing bike trails, part of which goes through an old train tunnel. Quite the experience. If you have two cars, park one at the end and drive bikes to the other so you don't have to do round trip on bikes.

Allison's personal favorite for running and cycling with children Tunnel Hill is a 45 mile "rails to trails" system that is less than a 20 minute drive away. We recommend to start at Tunnel Hill, Illinois trailhead to check out the photogenic and massive tunnel just 1/4 mile from the parking lot. In less than 10 miles south, you will reach the town of Vienna, Illinois where you can stop and refuel at Vienna City Park. The entire path is chat gravel- great for bikes, foot traffic and even strollers/canes. The path is mostly flanked by trees which provide welcoming shade and windbreak. Please note: There is a gradual decline going southbound with no more than a 2% grade. So it's not your imagination if the route back feels a little tougher!
