De rivier de Douro die bij Porto uitmondt in de Atlantische Oceaan werd in het verleden gebruikt om de (port) wijn uit de Dourostreek te vervoeren naar Porto om daar te worden opgeslagen. Veel bekende porthuizen bevinden zich aan de andere kant van de rivier in Vila Nova de Gaia. Op deze rivier bevinden zich de boten die voor dit transport zorgden. Nu wordt er maar éénmaal per jaar een wedstrijd mee georganiseerd. U kunt hier boeken voor een rondvaart over de Douro, Porthuizen bezoeken of lekker op een terrasje naar de voorbijgangers kijken.

Discover Praça da Ribeira and the surrounding streets. This neighborhood is the most emblematic and the heart of the historic center of Porto. Don't just visit the pier, also get lost in the alleys that lead to Escadas do Barredo to discover the authenticity of this neighborhood.

Ribeira is a very charming neighborhood with a strategic location. In it are located some of the most important monuments in Porto such as the St. Francis church and the Stock Exchange Palace, but it is also walking distance from Luiz I bridge and, more importantly, the famous Port wine lodges. However, it is very touristy (aka it is always crowded) and it is impossible to park there (an important factor to consider if you are renting a car in Porto).
