The cemetery at St Stephen's is one of the quietest and most peaceful spots in Newtown and Camperdown. Hardly anyone goes in and it is a lovely place to sit and contemplate under the trees. The graves are of people like Sir Thomas Mitchell and 19th century mariners.
Work began in 1884, the church boasts an old cemetery and gorgeous trees on its surrounding grounds.
One of the oldest graveyard in Sydney, with an old and majestic tree, not to be missed.
The church is a lovely little sandstone building, but the cemetery is the really interesting thing here. It's so quiet! And right in the centre of Newtown that's unusual. But that's never been proven. The great fig tree is one of the oldest in Australia, and predates white settlement. A fave hangout for alt and goth kids living in the hood.
