Gezellig bergdorp, met Chinaillon : een dorp met karaktervolle chalets (van in 1800)

One of the big local ski station. Nice alp village, even nicer than La Clusaz. Large choice of restaurant and bar

Le Grand Bornand was an established village before the introduction of skiing to the area. It was historically the place where the farmers came to meet every Wednesday to set the price for the local cheese, Reblochon. This is one of the most highly regarded cheeses in France, and along with Tomme de Savoie really are the 'taste' of the alps. The village has a well organised tourist information in the main square of the village opp. the church, with it's characteristic metallic steeple. Market day is Wednesday and is well worth a visit although the prices do reflect the scenery! You will find everything there - a selection of saucissons in a range of flavours and combinations, including wild boar, olives, spices and much, much more. There's too much to do in Le Grand Bornand to write about here. In summer there is a wonderful selection of activities for children and a swimming pool (open June to end of August). I've tried to put a few of the more special activities in this guide separately.
