The best place to view the sunset is at the corner of the Malecón y Paseo. This place is perfect for being alone with your thoughts. Go for a walk. Feel the breeze. Lie down on the Malecón. Some have been known to bring their guitars. We live on an island. Being on the waterfront opens your horizons. If the Malecón is wet, quickly move to the side; when the tide rolls in, it comes in fast.

This wall was a strategy to prevent the sea from coming inland during hurricane seasons. It goes along three municipalities: Old Havana, Centro Havana and Vedado. As time passed by Havana Malecon became more than just a simple wall. It’s a symbol of the city, a source of inspiration for songs, love affairs, even political events and tragedies. People and visitors seat there every day as the wall has become like benches to see the sunset, feel the breeze at night, fall in love or simply have a colloquium with the Yoruba Goddess Yemayá. That’s why it has been named the Big Havana Sofa. Some love jogging all along it while enjoying the magnificent view and it’s still the ideal spot for fishermen in the city.

The Malecón (officially Avenida de Maceo) is a broad esplanade, roadway, and seawall that stretches for 8 km (5 miles) along the coast in Havana, Cuba, from the mouth of Havana Harbor in Old Havana, along the north side of the Centro Habana neighborhood and the Vedado neighborhood, ending at the mouth of the Almendares River. Construction of the Malecón began in 1901, during temporary U.S. military rule. The main purpose of building the Malecón was to protect Havana from the sea and the so-called American Nortes.
