The obelisk memorial to John Whitton was financed by a private individual in Springwood. John Whitton, not fully celebrated in his lifetime, made a significant contribution in opening up the mountains and beyond to the railways, thus transforming NSW. It's a short walk to the Knapsack viaduct, also designed by John Whitton as part of the rail network but subsequently used for motorcars until the 1950s.
