Sagres is a charming village that has one of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Algarve. It has steep cliffs, an interesting windswept fortress and excellent beaches. Its appeal is mainly due to its sense of isolation and tranquility, which contrasts with the frenetic Algarve, and its proximity to exotic beaches such as Praia do Castelejo. In Sagres, temperatures are a little milder than in the rest of the Algarve, and the summers are cool thanks to the Atlantic winds. This city has a relaxed and easy going atmosphere with cafes and bars. In addition to the village, it also has the Fortress of Sagres, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça (16th century) and the museum dedicated to the Discoveries, the cliffs of Cabo de São Vicente (the most southwesterly point of all Continental Europe) also deserve a visit, and in its lighthouse, there is an exhibition about the lighthouses of Portugal (Wednesdays from 14:00h to 16:00h). One kilometer east of the square is the port of Baleeira, which is still dedicated to boat building and lobster fishing, and the marina. About 4 km from Sagres, on the way to Cabo de São Vicente, we find the remains of the Beliche Fortress, built in the 16th century, on a cliff, inside which there is a chapel, where the Church of Santa Catarina was built. , now in ruins. It used to be a hotel, but today it is falling apart and access is prohibited. Throughout this coastal area you will find many surfing and diving schools, as well as companies that offer boat trips and rental of equipment for surfing, bodyboarding, diving and other interesting activities. With a south coast (Mediterranean) and a west coast (Atlantic), the number and diversity of beaches provide excellent conditions for the practice of water sports. It should be noted that the sleepy town of Sagres is buzzing with activity during the Surf Festival, held over a weekend in mid-August and features musical performances and the presence of many surf lovers and fans. This city was transformed into a new fortified city by D. Henrique the Navigator, who also built here a semi-monastic navigation “school” specialized in cartography, astronomy and ship building, which was one of the main drivers of the Age of Discovery Portuguese. The story goes that in 1587 the English privateer Sir Francis Drake invaded and destroyed the fortifications that surrounded Sagres during an attack on the supply lines of the Spanish Armada. Ponta de Sagres was fortified again after the 1755 earthquake, which left few buildings

Lying on a rocky plateau at the quieter end of the Algarve region in southern Portugal, this pretty harbour town is the perfect base from which to access the many fine beaches along the Algarve’s lesser-known west coast, as the stunning Praia do Beliche, Praia do Tonel, Praia da Mareta, Praia Martinhal. Once considered to be the end of the world, Cape São Vicente is an highlight for people visiting Sagres, mostly on account of its impressive lighthouse which marks the south-western tip of the European continent. In a town famed for its maritime tradition, a visit and a meal at "A Sereia" at the harbour is a must.
