Site of circa 1638 trading posts established by Rhode Island founder Roger Williams and trader Richard Smith and the center of 17th century land disputes between Narragansett Tribe, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts. The home was destroyed in King Philip's War, rebuilt circa 1678, then renovated circa 1740, as one of the largest eighteenth-century Rhode Island slave-holding plantations. Smith's Castle is know for its award-winning twentieth-century restoration and is a National Register Historic Building & Archeological site. Costumed Docents give one hour tours featuring trading room and plantation era collection and lifestyle. Gift shop.

Not a castle in the European sense, but a large Georgian-style house built in the 17th century. This property played crucial roles in the establishment of Rhode Island and in King Philip's War. The grounds are now open as a museum (check the hours) and feature interesting events.
