Walk through the woods during the bright daytime with at least one friend. Lovely for hiking. In the winter, it's a fabulous local spot for cross country skiiers.

If you want to spend the day walking in the woods, head over to Thatcher woods. You'll enjoy walking on unpaved trails along the Des Plaines River. There are plenty of deer, chipmunks and there's even a trailside museum you can visit. It is walkable but you may want to drive to the starting point. There is a parking lot.

The indoor museum in an old Italianate House is rife with taxidermy and exhibits about the area. The hiking trails are short and easy to navigate. The woods are along the Des Plaines River. There is no charge but a donation is appreciated.

Cute nature museum that houses taxidermy of local creatures as well as a rehabilitation program for owls, coyotes, hawks, and other animals. Free!
