Food Scene

Maybe I'm biased but this roastery, originally from my home town in Wellington, New Zealand, serves the best coffee in town. Open Monday to Friday until 3pm, it's just a cool little spot off the beaten track.

This place does toast well. Until recently they only made toast here, but now have more of the usual brunch suspects like poached eggs, avocado smash. I know it sounds super basic and un-impressive...but they do the simple things right. The bread is freshly baked and they make their own in-house peanut butter they lovingly spread on. It's amazing. The coffee is really good too.

Super busy over the weekend, you may have to wait.. but it's worth it. The classic Melbourne Brunch spot. Good coffee, contemporary but quaint decor and friendly staff in a historic building.

Drinks & Nightlife

I stumbled here when I first moved to the area and was so impressed by this brewery. They have a very cool vibe and a constantly rotating list of beers that will surprise you. They experiment a lot but also have some good classics in the Pale Ale and Lagers they have regularly on tap. The decor is very DIY and relaxed, with palm trees and posters of Bill Murray. They have a food truck outside that they serve delicious pizza they bring in to the brewery for you. Off the beaten track, this is a spot for locals and beer lovers alike.

This place is a lot bigger than Moon Dog Brewery. It's also a lot fancier. It's more of a date night venue. They have fairy lights on the high ceilings which make the place look beautiful. There is a lot of wood and concrete in the decor and you can see why it's a popular wedding reception spot. Because of this, they are pre-booked for every Saturday for the next year in advance....so they are only open Wednesday and Fridays....so get in quick! They also make a delicious pizza. The beer is less experimental than Moon Dog, but wider spread and accessible. They've got a great pale ale!

Across the road from Mountain Goat, The Royston is a really chill place to have some good beer, wine or spirit of your choice. They offer a good range of pub food too. It's usually pretty quiet, but the people there are super nice and the selection of craft beers is noteworthy among beer connoisseurs throughout the city.

An indoor and outdoor rooftop bar with an amazing view of the city. This is both a tourist and locals venue as it has one of the best rooftop bars in the city. You will be blown away by the spectacular skyline, even if the drinks are a little pricey.

A really nice drive or bike ride that meanders along the Yarra River and will take you past Bell Bird Park, Studley Park Boat house, Yarra Bend Park, the old asylum and a picturesque golf course. The scenic shortcut to highway 21 (Northcote) takes about 10-15minutes.

Come here just before dusk.... You will see where all the bats or 'flying foxes' roost during the day and watch them wake up! Also cool to see during the day, they line the trees and make a lot of noise. Super cool watching them wake up and get chatty! These are the type of bats that only eat fruit, so don't worry!

Simply spectacular. These gardens are massive and cover a very large selection of plants from all over the world. You can tell that a lot of people have put in a lot of time to make these gardens so perfect. It's easy to spend a couple days just meandering around. A real gem for plant lovers and general outdoor enthusiasts.

A lovely park right next to the CBD. You may be lucky enough to see the beautiful Rainbow Lorikeet (easily recognizable by their loud squacks and beautiful green feathers, flying in pairs). The park is lined with huge old pine trees (that have big plastic bands around them to stop the possums climbing up). It's a really good spot for some down time before hitting the CBD centre, which is less than 15 minute walk away.

Entertainment & Activities

My favourite cinema in Melbourne. It's about an hour to walk or you could catch a tram to the train station that stops right outside..(a 30 minute trip) or simplely drive in 15! They have a good selection of mainstream and art house / festival movies and DELICOUS popcorn, and you can have craft beer on tap or wine. Small cinemas with comfy seats.
