The museum’s new Screens Series shows films by internationally acclaimed filmmakers like Apichatpong Weerasethakul and one of my favorites, indie director Abel Ferrara. There’s also a great calendar of film symposia and discussions with an eye on how cinema fits into the world of visual art, which is very inspiring. General admission is $18 or $12 for students. On Thursdays between 7 pm and 9 pm, you can pay what you wish. The suggested minimum is $2.

Contemporary art museum housed in a sleek white building with a gift shop & cafe in the lobby.
While contemporary art might not be everyone's bag, the New Museum is unique in its dedication to exhibiting living artists (a thing virtually unheard of at other institutions). On the weekend, you can go up to the Sky Room for a selfie that is sure to break some personal records.

“The Tenement Museum is a great place to learn about the history of our city's roots. You'll be transported back in time to see how early immigrants lived in the tenements on the lower East side. The tours typically last one hour and usually require stair climbing. Not good for children under 6. Check their website for tours and times. Reservations are a must!”
