It lies in a breathtaking setting with gorgeous views rolling off in every direction.
The monastery was begun in 1320, the new congregation being approved by Pope Clement VI in 1344. The abbey was for centuries one of the main land possessors in the Siena region.
The abbey complex has a cloister with a stunning cycle of frescoes about the life of Saint Benedict, founder of the abbey's order. The setting is magical. Be there by midday to ensure entry.
Beautiful working abbey with monks, plainsong, cloister with frescoes by Sodoma, library, pharmacy, shop etc. Excellent independent restaurant/pizzeria La Torre, at the entrance to the abbey.
