So called because its construction was erroneously attributed to the Duchess Matilde di Canossa, it was built in the 16th century by the government of Lucca along the Selice canal, which later became Burlamacca, as an observation tower against sea incursions. In the 16th century it was raised by a floor and in 1703 the public clock that was on the Beach Commissioner's Palace was transferred to the top of the tower. During the nineteenth century it was used as a prison. In 1947 the top floor was demolished; it is used as a hall for exhibitions and cultural events. Behind the tower the picturesque view of the Darsena Lucca, the city's first marina built by Maria Luisa of Bourbon-Spain in 1820.

La Torre Matilde (a 800 metri dalla villetta) è uno dei primi edifici di Viareggio. Già nel 1541 salutò Carlo V con dei colpi a salve. Nel Novecento, è stata un carcere fino al '45. E’ visitabile gratuitamente ogni anno, la settimana del 25 marzo, in occasione della Festa del Patrono di Viareggio, La Santissima Annunziata.

La massiccia Torre di Viareggio, detta impropriamente “Torre Matilde" (attribuendone erroneamente la costruzione alla Duchessa Matilde di Canossa) fu fatta edificare dal Governo lucchese con deliberazione del 5 giugno 1534, in prossimità dello sbocco a mare della Fossa della Selice (attuale canale Burlamacca), a difesa dei magazzini e del nascente borgo. Nei primi anni dell'Ottocento la Torre fu adibita, per la prima volta a carcere non adatto per ospitare detenuti "criminali", poi anche a Bagno dei forzati. A partire dal 1823, dopo che le carceri furono trasferite a Camaiore, la torre fu destinata esclusivamente a Bagno dei forzati, fino al 1847 quando anche questa funzione fu soppressa dal Granduca di Toscana. Dal marzo 1848 al maggio 1849 divenne sede della Guardia Civica, poi rimase inutilizzata. Allora il Municipio chiese al Governo toscano di adibirla a carcere pretorile. La Torre, dopo un accurato restauro conservativo, che ha riportato la struttura alla sua configurazione di origine, è sede di attività culturali ed espositive a carattere temporaneo. --------------------------------------------------------------------- The massive Tower of Viareggio, improperly called "Torre Matilde" (erroneously attributing its construction to the Duchess Matilde of Canossa) was built by the Government of Lucca by resolution of 5 June 1534, near the outlet to the sea of the Fossa della Selice (current channel Burlamacca), to defend the warehouses and the nascent village. In the early nineteenth century the Tower was used, for the first time as a prison not suitable to accommodate prisoners "criminals", then also in Bagno dei forzati. From 1823, after the prisons were transferred to Camaiore, the tower was used exclusively for Bagno dei forzati, until 1847 when this function was also suppressed by the Grand Duke of Tuscany. From March 1848 to May 1849 it became the seat of the Civic Guard, then it remained unused. Then the City Hall asked the Tuscan government to use it as a pretorile prison. The Tower, after a careful conservative restoration, which brought the structure back to its original configuration, is home to cultural activities and temporary exhibitions.
