Arts & Culture
Historic Site in Durres. The ‘must see’ of any visit to the City. The Amphitheatre overlooks the old town of Durrës and is a short walk from the central square. Began under the Roman Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century AD, it is the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Balkan Peninsula (once having a capacity of some 15,000 to 20,000 people) showing the wealth and power Dyrrachium once possessed. Inside the Amphitheatre are some attractive paleochristian mosaics (dating from the 6th Century) housed in an early Christian chapel.

The museum is really interesting and represent all ages from Illyrian times to the Ottoman. The ticket for the Roman Ampitheatre should also be valid for here. The collection consists of archeological items recovered from the Durres area and it is focused on three periods: the Ilyrians, the Hellenistic period and the Romans. It is now labelled in English throughout. There are many beautiful objects which justify a visit here if you are in town.
