About ¾ mile away. Aldi has a lot in common with Trader Joe’s. Its prices are low, and it stocks a limited selection of items. Aldi carries only about 1,300 of the fastest-moving grocery items, while most grocery stores sell about 30,000 items. With fewer items, stores can be smaller (which means lower rent and electricity costs). And you won’t find many name-brand items because the majority of what Aldi sells is its own private-label products (which cuts out the middleman to keep costs lower). You’ll have to use a quarter deposit for a shopping cart, though you get this back when you return the cart. You will also have to bag your own groceries. Why bother? Good organic foods at a good price, and an interesting selection of European foods not generally found in the big grocery stores.

Food: Recommended Casual Restaurants

An innovative local eatery that melds the best of French country cuisine and American country products. Their concept is simple: They offer French style dishes prepared using the freshest ingredients available. But the food is only part of the experience: They offer a welcoming atmosphere where you’re warmly greeted and served. In a refurbished a 1925 Del Ray house the restaurant reminiscent of an old Virginia farmhouse where you can “come casual” and relax. Brunch is especially good here.

5.1 miles away. We lived in Italy for more than 12 years and can attest to the fact that this place serves absolutely authentic Neapolitan Pizza. You stand in line (and the lines can be very long at peak times), order a pizza per person (they only come in one size), pay the bill and then sit down and wait for it to be brought to you. You’ll need to gather your utensils, water, etc., near the seating area. Plan to bus your table when done. We also recommend the salads and small plates (their homemade arancini are especially good). Closed on Mondays. No reservations taken, though you can dial ahead and carry out (assuming they will answer the phone during busy times).

1.4 miles away. A neighborhood hangout that is Alexandria’s version of “Cheers” (well, at least the west end of Alexandria). They like to brag that they, “Proudly serve nearly 100% scratch-made food”. We’re not sure how close to 100% they are, but we can say that they serve good old-fashioned American food at a reasonable price. We especially like the weekly specials to include Maine Lobsters on Wednesday (where else can you get a full 2-pound lobster with all the trimmings for $28.99?) and Friday night’s prime rib. Wines are reasonably priced, service is very friendly and they have a full bar. Indoor and outdoor dining available (though the view is of a parking lot).

Delivery available. The Halal Guys started in 1990 as a single hot dog cart on the corner of 53rd Street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan. Their transition from selling hot dogs to offering halal meals to Muslim cab drivers quickly drew massive lines, and the brand grew from there. The menu is straightforward, primarily focusing on chicken, gyro meat, falafel, and rice, served as either a platter or sandwich. We usually order the chicken platter, each. While their gyro and chicken are popular, what many people line up for is their mysterious white sauce and fiery red sauce. The white sauce, in particular, has a cult following, and its exact ingredients are a closely-guarded secret.
