If you're in the market for a classic-yet-classy KC-style BBQ restaurant, we marginally prefer the food at Q39. Mary's is a decent place to get a burger any time, especially before or after a show at the Uptown, but you'd be missing out if you visit for something other than drag bingo (W, Th, F, S) or drag brunch (Su only). An absolute must-see for any visitor to KC. Closed Monday and Tuesday, but you can still walk around on the grounds and view the sculptures. Open late (9pm) on Thursday and Friday. Free admission!
Affecting, solemn, well-done museum with detailed, text-heavy exhibits. Not a good choice for young children... with the exception of the elevator up to the top of the Liberty Memorial. The Memorial is separately priced and has the best (only?) publicly available high-rise view of the city. If the weather is nice, this can be a pleasant long walk from the house. You can always Uber home!

Even if you're not normally a big fan of classical music or ballet, the building alone is worth a trip. The white marble lobby in particular is absolutely stunning.

The residence/studio of legendary American realist Thomas Hart Benton is managed by the Missouri parks department, but is nevertheless a "regular" early-1900s home in the Roanoke neighborhood just across Southwest Trafficway. The studio and family residence are frozen in time in an unusual and intimate fashion. Limited hours; check the website to ensure they'll be open when you arrive. 10-minute walk.

Parks & Nature

Kansas City's municipal parks system has been large and well-funded for more than a hundred years. The main urban green spaces near the house are clean, popular, and safe, even if the weather isn't always cooperative.
This large park has had many recent improvements to its walking trails and interpretive nature stations. Lots of hillside stairs and elevation change if you're looking for a challenging, scenic run.

Well-lit and heavily used, Mill Creek Park is a great choice for solo guests in need of a dedicated walking/running path, even at odd hours. Try some of the exercise stations on your way to the beautiful JC Nichols Memorial Fountain at the south end.
