This natural harbour has been described as one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world!- the North Island's only fjord; Jurassic-like. In a word: stunning. Roadless, only accessed by water-taxi or by kayak.
Home to magnificent specimens of the native Kauri tree, the second most majestic tree after the Sequoia/Redwood. An easy short boardwalk or longer, more challenging walks.

Home to magnificent specimens of the native Kauri tree, the second most majestic tree after the Sequoia/Redwood. An easy short boardwalk or longer, more challenging walks.
This is one of the great walks you can do in all New Zealand!- gently uphill though stands of mature native forest, then down to the Wairakau stream and eventually to the Western arm of Whangaroa Harbour. Native forest, volcanic cliff faces, 2 streams to ford, river 'flats', then the DOC hut for lunch; total time 3 hours. Now allow yourselves to be transported back to the starting place by water-taxi, for a cheap relaxing harbour tour!

14 Wairakau RdThis is one of the great walks you can do in all New Zealand!- gently uphill though stands of mature native forest, then down to the Wairakau stream and eventually to the Western arm of Whangaroa Harbour. Native forest, volcanic cliff faces, 2 streams to ford, river 'flats', then the DOC hut for lunch; total time 3 hours. Now allow yourselves to be transported back to the starting place by water-taxi, for a cheap relaxing harbour tour!
The Conservation Department's walk along the Mahinepua Peninsula takes 1 hour either way. Along the spine of the peninsula with beaches and rocky coves left & right, the path is well made and easy, taking you through manuka scrubland and offering views to the Cavalli Islands, Flat Island and Stephenson's Island group.
