Considered by many to be the most beautiful of CapeNature’s protected areas, Kogelberg Nature Reserve earns that reputation largely to the fact that it occupies an area with minimal human interference. Its exceptional diversity and quality of fynbos means it is considered the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom. The reserve presents perhaps the finest example of mountain fynbos in the Western Cape and is a world-renowned World Heritage Site. At Kogelberg, a sensitive core of 18 000ha of the reserve has been kept pristine and wild. Here there is much biological diversity and conservation is the priority. Only activities which do not adversely affect natural processes and wildlife are allowed. If you have driven along the R44 between Rooiels and Kleinmond, you would have marveled at the beauty of the Kogelberg. The reserve’s pristine beauty abounds all year round – during the blazing heat of summer when green is not what you expect, or in rains and mists of winter when torrents of water cascade down rock faces that were bone dry only weeks before. The whole area is inspirational and one of more than 400 biosphere reserves worldwide. Kogelberg was South Africa’s first registered biosphere reserve and it encompasses the entire coastal area from Gordon’s Bay to the Bot River vlei, and inland to Grabouw and the Groenland Mountain. Reserve office hours: 07h30 – 16h00 Reserve office phone number: +27 (0)28 271 5138 Emergency number: +27 (0)28 271 5138 (Answering machine will refer to officer on duty) Cellphone reception: No reception, last reception point is at the turn from the tar road onto the gravel road.

Marianas at Owls Barn’ is one of Cape Town’s most treasured country restaurants. Overlooking vegetable gardens, fruit trees and the mountains beyond, Marianas offers discerning foodies an unpretentious taste of Cape cuisine, with French and Italian influences. Receiving top ratings in the Rossouw food guide, three years in a row, and winner of Eat-Outs ‘Best Country Kitchen‘ award, Marianas is not only an experience in delicious cuisine, but a return to the practice of leisurely lunches. Marianas sources almost all her ingredients entirely from the garden. The beautiful kitchen garden produces herbs, olives, vegetables…and bulges at the seams with fruit trees such as guava, citrus, quince, fig and pomegranate. Mariana and Peter’s philosophy of sourcing ingredients as close to home as possible, is one of the elements that form part of the restaurant’s kitchen sorcery – also benefiting local dairy farms, fisherman and suppliers in the Overberg region. Mariana and her helpers toil all week to produce food for the restaurant and deli because everything is made from scratch; from handmade pasta, to breads, sauces and pickles – infusing everything with the essence that makes the food so delicious. But above all, there is heart in everything that comes out of the kitchen at Marianas, and you’ll taste it in every morsel. Opening hours – Thursday to Sunday – arrive from 12 noon. No 21 in the 2016 Worlds best restaurants awards. Chief reason to visit: Chef Luke Dale-Roberts is the closest thing Cape Town has to a rock star chef – and with good reason. Combining culinary braggadocio and classical technique, his food would stand out in any of the world’s gastronomic capitals, but in the South African city it’s pretty much unique. What’s the vibe? Informal, industrial chic. Channelling the artsy, edgy vibe of Woodstock, the neighbourhood where it’s based, The Test Kitchen is a low-lit, almost clubby space of exposed brickwork, hanging pipes and leather-backed seats, where the cooking – carried out in an open plan kitchen – is the star turn. Typical dishes: Most plates arrive with a theatrical flourish but the “Light Curry Glazed” signature is the most memorable on the tasting menu: the local fish first arrives, steaming between two concrete flowers pots, sitting on charcoal, before it is plated and brought back atop a carrot and cashew purée, finished with carrot beurre noisette. ABOUT LUKE DALE-ROBERTS “A truly fantastic chef, … he has this ability of putting seemingly incongruent ingredients together in such a way that they work amazingly well – which is something close to my heart.” – Heston Blumenthal, Chef and Owner, The Fat Duck. Greenhouse is a place where local ingredients and great African fables come together in a tasting menu that takes guests on a unique culinary experience. It's why we were ranked number four in the 2015 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards' list of South Africa's top 10 restaurants, along with the Bsochendal Style Award. The Summer menu offers dishes such as “Release the Kraken”, an ethically-sourced octopus dish dramatically presented with swirling dry ice and bursts of black octopus ink. One of the first signature chef restaurants in the Cape Winelands, the Jordan Restaurant with George Jardine brings top chef George Jardine’s brand of contemporary fare from city to country. The focus on the flavours of locally sourced, seasonal ingredients is evident from his kitchen vegetable and herb garden to wine barrel fish smoker and wood-fired oven. Expect smoky, smouldering country flavours in simple combinations on a contemporary plate – with signature smoked yellowtail, steamed Saldanha mussels, seared ribeye and springbok potroast. The main ingredient is enhanced by smoked garlic, aubergine, fennel, prune or potato puree. A trip to the walk-in cheese room to select your own board of artisanal Cape farm cheeses with preserves and breads rounds off a spectacular meal. Vintages from Jordan Wine Estate form the cornerstone of the restaurant’s wine list. The Jordan Restaurant is also a showcase for exclusive vintages of the Jordan Wine Estate Cape Winemakers Guild wines, along with choice wines from other Stellenbosch wineries. Cool and contemporary, the restaurant features a tranquil terrace with stunning views overlooking the vineyards and lake next to the Jordan cellar and tasting room. Dinner is a gastronomic experience, providing the opportunity for George and Louise to wow their guests. Booking is essential. Sebastian and his team are fortunate to have 40 years of viticulture experience on this unique farm. His wine making approach is instinctive, believing that wine is made in the vineyards and minimal intervention is needed. Ancient, low-yielding Chenin Blanc and Pinotage vines are honoured in the process, allowing the wines to be a true reflection of the land and vineyards. He has a hands-on approach to wine-making, using old-cellar techniques like natural yeasts and old open concrete ‘’kuipe’’ fermenters. His non-conformist approach embraces the old but also creatively uses modern winemaking techniques to produce limited quantities of specialised, characterful and authentic wines. Farm Platters & Picnics Essential to wine is food. Pre-order a picnic baskets of freshly prepared, farm-made food. You can also choose to relax amongst the vines, at the riverbed or overlooking the dam. To book your picnic at Beaumont, please mail info@beaumont.co.za Telephone +27 (0)28-284 9194
