Alfama is the oldest and one of the typical neighborhoods of Lisbon. Its name derives from Arabic Al-hamma (الحمة), which means baths or fountains. Above and surrounding the Alfama are the hill of the São Jorge Castle, fortress and royal palace until the sixteenth century, and the hill of Saint Vincent.
