Today Springfontein has what, in Burgundy, is reverently called a “monopoly”: an exclusive appellation named “Springfontein Rim”. Today, Springfontein produces wines that can stand up to national and international comparison, but which have their own unique typicity that uniquely reflects their particular place of origin. Key members of the Springfontein family are also shareholders in the company in which our farm and our activities are integrated. Under the name of UBUNTU Panafrodynamics, these members have a stake in Springfontein’s capital and thus in its assets, and such a stake is in principle open to anyone once he has proven himself or turned out as a Springfonteiner.

One of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa and one of the closest to the sea pioneered viticulture and winemaking in the beautiful, cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. The Estate specialises in producing highly individual, terroir driven Pinot noir and Chardonnay, which are widely regarded as the best in South Africa and among the finest in the New World.   Owner, Anthony Hamilton Russell took over from the founder, Tim Hamilton Russell, in 1991, and bought the property from the family in 1994.  Tim originally purchased the undeveloped 170 hectare property in 1975, after an exhaustive search for the most southerly site on which to make South Africa’s top cool climate wines from a selection of noble varieties. Anthony narrowed their focus to Pinot noir and Chardonnay only and registered Hamilton Russell Vineyards as an Estate, committing to work only with grapes from their terroir. Extensive soil research initiated in 1994 identified 52 hectares of stony, clay-rich, shale-derived soil as optimal for the individual, origin expressive style they aim for and all plantings have now been limited to this soil type. Anthony with his wife Olive, winemaker Emul Ross and viticulturist Johan Montgomery are completely dedicated to expressing the personality of the Hamilton Russell Vineyards terroir in their wines. Tiny yields and intense worldwide demand keep the elegant, highly individual, Estate grown Pinot noir and Chardonnay in very short supply.

Big 5 Marine Adventures

The term Marine Big Five originated in Gansbaai and refers to the prolific populations of whales, Great White sharks, dolphins, penguins and seals that flourish along this coastline near the southernmost tip of Africa. Where King Lion reigns over the animal kingdom, the Great White is the undisputed icon of the marine kingdom and the largest fish species on earth. It is, after all, the mysterious Great Whites that earned this former fisherman's village international fame as the Mecca of Shark Cage Diving. Mankind's fascination with these Apex hunters and his quest to understand them better, also spearheaded several extensive marine research and conservation projects in Gansbaai, aimed at saving them and other marine species from extinction. Today, Gansbaai boasts eight world-renowned shark cage diving companies and a whale watching company that are all - in one way or another - involved with marine research projects to conserve our five flagship species. A trip on any of these boats are guaranteed to bring you into close proximity of at least three members of the Marine Big Five on any given day. Five Flagship Species The area between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, named Shark Alley, is where the Great Whites casually hang out during the winter months to feast on the colony of fat Cape Fur Seals that breeds on Geyser Rock. The adjacent Dyer Island is a protected bird sanctuary where endangered species such as the African Penguin, Cape Cormorant, Gannet and Black Oystercatcher breed. The entire area, including Walker Bay, is the playfield of the gigantic Southern Right Whales that flock here between May and December to date, mate and give birth in our sheltered bays. Various species of dolphins, including the playful bottlenose, can often be seen surfing the waves throughout the year. A huge pod, totaling more than 2 000 that joyfully raced past Walker Bay, had locals agog last year. The whales cruise close to the shore and the boats, enticing onlookers with mesmerising displays of lob-taling, tail-slapping and breaching. Unlike the shy Humpback whales that keep a safe distance, the Southern Right Whales seem to bask in the human adoration. The highlight of any boat trip in this area is witnessing a Great White breach right out of the water to ambush a seal. The real life hunting and predation scenario beats any fictitious movie and is an unforgettable experience!

BIG 5 SEA SAFARI - WALKER BAY are highly recommended for a memorable 2hr Big 5 Sea Safari. Their goal is to target Walker Bays Big 5, Whales, Dolphin, Seals, Penguin and Marine Birds. Theydepart from the harbour of Gansbaai and cruise along the scenic route passing the cliffs of De Kelders and De Platt Beach. Observe the stunning coast line, contrasting white beach's with the blue skies and chameleon waters that stretch for miles from Gansbaai to Hermanus, we then set course and head out into the middle of the bay in search of our Marine Big 5. Bottlenose Dolphin are often seen on their trips and if you are lucky enough to encounter a school this is the time to grab the Zoom lens as Dolphins love to entertain and it’s a photographer’s paradise. On our return to Gansbaai harbour they pay more attention to Danger point, this is often where they find the resident Bryde's whales of the area. Bryde’s whales are hunters and feed on wide variety of fish, mackerel is common to the waters as well as planktonic, crustaceans, and cephalopods. Bryde's whales have an upright, falcate dorsal fin that is up to 46.25 cm (18.21 in) in height, averages 34.4 cm (13.5 in), and is usually between 30 and 37.5 cm (11.8 and 14.8 in). It is often frayed or ragged along its rear margin and located about two-thirds of the way along the back. On your Big 5 Sea Safari their crew will educate you on all aspects of Marine life, with a qualifying Marine Biologist and a Skipper with over 15yrs experience there is a wealth of knowledge for you to tap. No trip is the same and they can never guarantee what you will see, they hope to spot the local Marine Big 5, but there is also so much more Marine mammal and bird life on offer. It's an avid photographers dream! Finally we must not forget the past, Danger Point is also famous as this is where the British iron paddle-wheel frigate HMS Birkenhead, weighing 1400 tons, was tragically lost. This stretch of water has earned its reputation by default, our Marine Big 5 Sea Safari is dependent on the water conditions at danger point, if the water conditions for this area will not deliver a memorable experience your trip may be switch to our Walker Bay Big 5 Safari as we always strive to deliver an experience you will treasure for a life time, and we must respect this stretch of water.
