Food, drinks, music, apples… this place has everything for a great fall weekend! Apple picking was super easy and they have a map for which apples are where and which are in season. The food is absolutely fantastic, especially the pizza cause of their brick oven. It comes out hot and delicious :) The burgers were also fantastic and cooked to perfection. The live music started around 1pm and it was very chill and nice on a Saturday afternoon. I also recommend their apple cider donuts! They’re soft and chewy and addictive. I would buy two boxes cause I eat them so fast! Overall, this place is the best for apple picking and spending a nice fall weekend to hang out. Highly recommend everything here :) At Twin Star Orchards, they use one simple ingredient to make their Brooklyn Cider House ciders – apples. This is why their work begins on their farm.

One word: Amazing! As delicious as it is beautiful, their pizza always satisfies. The tomato sauce on the High Falls margarita is a treat in itself. Oh, and grab a local beer or cider to enjoy alongside a slice of deep dish grandma's pizza or traditional round pizza. Please ask to seat outside since its a gorgeous place

Absolutely great. You can't go wrong with anything you get here. The location can seem a bit small but does hold a good out of people even during peak times. Incredibly friendly staff, and the atmosphere is very cozy. Drink menu is all delicious and stacked with local beers galore! And no matter what you get for food you'll be happy. Donuts are to die for.

Very visual shop, from the display of artisan food products and chocolates to their Mitzvah wall, so lots of pins and art supporting local artists and flyers for local events in town. It's very community oriented. Bonus: this cute coffee place has good cider, a fascinating array of chocolates, and serves the best coffee.

This is a place where 5 stars are not enough! The food is incredibly good, and super fresh - everything is done right at the spot. The owners are beyond friendly. A unique experience, with minted carafes of water, Arabic music on the background, and intriguing décor. There is al fresco seating both on the front and back side of the restaurant. The food is Middle Eastern, with carnivorous and vegetarian selections. There is a selection of bottled microbrews, several wines and sodas. Dessert is also offered.

Reservations highly recommended. The menu, which is separated into snacks, small plates, and big plates, does a good job of touring the flavors of Italy, the Caribbean, and South America with dishes that are at once adventuresome but familiar. This approach is eloquently embodied in the Peruvian-inspired chicken thighs, which are rubbed in cumin and garlic, served with a perfectly crackly skin, drizzled with cilantro-lime sauce, and accompanied by a purple potato mash ($25). The spicy mango barbecue wings are wildly popular ($15) The lush, tree-draped backyard, with a gravel patio, overlooks the Rondout Creek, offering a place for cafe customers to take their lattes and breakfast sandwiches during the day, and sit-down dinner service at night.

City/town information

Depending on the time of year, the uncanny stillness of the place may strike you. Few cars, and even less foot traffic. Maybe you'll grew accustomed to noticing Rosendale’s motionless things: the lattice of just-budding trees crisp against the robin’s-egg blue sky; the cliff-slice of limestone veering upward against the car road; the Victorian houses with their haphazard cupolas. Growing used to these static scenes, find yourself observing in turn small, subtle changes to the landscape: the way the creek water frothed on stormier days, the daily variation of the spring growth on the branches, a single orange fox, leaping along the tree line.

High Falls makes a big impression for such a tiny place. Covering just 1.69 square miles in Ulster County, with a population of about 700, according to the 2020 census, the hamlet has attracted some big names over the decades. Nestled between the Catskill Mountains to the north and the Shawangunk Ridge to the south, with the Rondout Creek winding through it, High Falls is minutes from two well-known hiking and rock-climbing destinations: the Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park Preserve. The hamlet has long attracted New Yorkers seeking weekend homes; during the pandemic, many of those weekenders have become full-time residents. High Falls’s small commercial center is in the town of Marbletown, and sections of the hamlet also lie in the towns of Rosendale and Rochester. Some businesses and residences that fall outside High Falls’s official geographic boundaries have High Falls addresses because they are served by the High Falls post office. The hamlet’s architecture is eclectic, with 18th-century stone houses as well as high-end contemporary homes in the 45-acre, seven-home Duchess Farm Equestrian Community development, where Ms. Kane and Mr. Newman live. The downtown area is lined with well-preserved examples of the 19th-century architecture that sprang up around the Delaware and Hudson Canal, which transported coal from Pennsylvania through High Falls to Kingston, N.Y., where it was shipped to New York City.

Neighborhoods

New Paltz, N.Y.: Beautiful, Sporty and Cultured — Surrounded by nature preserves and anchored by a state university, the Ulster County town is 10 minutes from our cottage! Recreation is close, too. We have the Shawangunk Ridge mountain just down the road. You can bike, hike, walk kayak, all within literally five to 10 minutes of downtown. The village center is chock-full of restaurants with globe-hopping cuisines (Tibetan, Thai, Italian, German, Mexican, Japanese). There are also boutiques, cafes, gastro pubs, a new cheesecake shop and a quirky shopping center near the Wallkill River called Water Street Market. The Denizen Theatre at the market’s upper level has some wonderful shows. Art galleries and craft shops offer supplemental eye candy to the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art on the SUNY New Paltz campus. East of the historic village, out toward Interstate 87, is more conventional retail — several shopping centers with chain stores. West of the river, houses and lots grow bigger, and farms, orchards and vineyards unspool. Unison Arts, on Mountain Rest Road, has sculptures arrayed in fields. Coppersea, a 75-acre distillery on Springtown Road, produces spirits from local grain.
