Outside of their great hot dogs, the Skyline is famous for being "Hank's last stop". On New Years Day 1953, country singer Hank Williams was on his way to a concert date in Ohio. His driver pulled into the Skyline for a bathroom break after driving all night. When he came back to the car, Hank was unresponsive in the back seat. Hank Williams was pronounced dead in Oak Hill at 29. A copy of his death certificate hangs inside on the wall.

The Heart of the New River Gorge, Thurmond was established by Captain William D. Thurmond and incorporated in 1903. Serving as a railroad town, Thurmond was at its heyday in the 1920's with more coal running through it than Cincinnati, Ohio. Thurmond hosted the Guiness Book of World Record's longest poker game, is one of Travel & Leisure's coolest ghost towns in America, is where the movie Matewan was filmed, and is a put-in for the upper New River whitewater rafting community.
Today, around 80 percent of Thurmond is owned by the National Park Service for the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, and the entire town is a designated historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. And we weren’t joking when we called it a ghost town — Thurmond is the least-populous municipality in West Virginia with a population of five people! The well-preserved buildings, including hotels, a bank and the train depot will give you a sense of the town’s golden era. The eerie atmosphere of Thurmond leads many to believe that this almost abandoned town is haunted.

This 8-mile one-way route takes you from Canyon Rim Visitor Center down to the bottom of the gorge and then back up the opposite side. The road travels down to the bottom of the gorge in a series of hairpin turns. Pull-offs and interpretive exhibits along the way offer opportunities to enjoy the views and learn more about area history and nature.
On the way down, you will get a unique view from directly under the New River Gorge Bridge. At the bottom of the gorge, you will pass through the historic town sites of Fayette and South Fayette. Cross the Tunney Hunsaker Bridge over the New River and travel 1/10 mile to a public parking area for an up close look at the river and Fayette Station Rapid.
Fayette Station Road winds back up to Fayetteville on the opposite side of the gorge with additional views, pull-outs, and trailhead parking along the way. The road joins Route 19 just south of the New River Gorge Bridge.

A popular play spot for local kayakers, Kanawha Falls is located outside of the park on the Kanawha River about ¾ of a mile west of Gauley Bridge, on Highway 60. The falls spans the entire width of the river and drops at its’ highest point about 15 feet. A low dam above the falls diverts water into a hydropower facility, but at any water level it is worth a stop at the small park just below the falls.
Driving Directions: Follow Highway 60 west from Gauley Bridge for about 3/4 miles. There will be a dirt parking area on the left. Stop there to view the falls.
