If you are willing to travel "over the hill," you won't be disappointed. Sitting at the base of the Rockies is a desert! Play in the sand all day, surf down, hike up, let the kids play in the stream, (when we are not in drought season!). After a long, hot day in the sun, just 12 miles away is the "Sand Dunes Pool" in Hooper, CO. Admission is inexpensive and a new "adult only" section in a green house allows soaking, swimming and playful fun. Sand Dunes is only 2 hours from our house.

Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve

Being the daughter of a coal miner, this is a must see if you are in the area. Just 3 miles from our exit (or you can go the back way with our help and see some really cool stuff, coal mines, coal ovens, etc.), this historic site is touching. Families lost in a coal miners strike, families were attacked, having to hide underground, with only some surviving.

City/town information
Part of the Highway of Legends, this small quaint town sits between two dikes (hence "Stonewall), near Monument and North Lake. This drive heads west (Highway 12), hitting many other little villages and historic locations, ending in La Veta (US Hwy 160) heading back to Walsenburg.
The drive is only an hour if you were just went from Trinidad to La Veta, but plan on the whole day, stop at Stonewall, have lunch, visit with the locals, play at the lake and just hang out. Beautiful scenery. Plan on at least an hour in Cuchara to walk the boardwalk and eat the "Yacht Club."
