Beach

Tourist Lumahai Is a very unique beautiful beach requiring a gentle but maybe slippery hike down, with an unmarked parking location on the side of the road as you leave Hanalei going towards Tunnels. Look for cars parked along the road as it curves at the outer rim of the bay or refer to guide books for a map. The interesting rock formation creates a bathtub in the ocean that has rocking waves with incredibly beautiful turquoise water as it is further out than Hanalei Bay. Not a good location for swimming if its winter time and big waves.

Anini Beach from Princeville You can drive to Anini, it is a fabulous shaded very long shallow warmer water snorkeling beach, about a 10 drive heading back the way you came from the airport. However, if you'd like to experience a beautiful hike down to Anini, walk or park just outside the Princeville Westin, which is close to the entrance of Princeville, off of Wyllie Rd. There is a trail on the right side just past the public free parking lot which is just before the Westin on the right. Can be slippery and buggy. There is a nice outdoor pool bar and restaurant at the Westin. Also Nanea is a fine dining option at the Westin. Pali Ke Kua It is walkable, on your way to the 1 Hotel, go through the condo complex that is just past the Hideaways Pizza Pub Restuarant. There is no public parking there but you can walk down the “private” paved walkway to a very small excellent snorkeling beach.

Food scene

RESTAURANTS AND MORE MY FAMILY ENJOYS We especially like the food trucks in Hanalei and Kapaa . Farmer’s Markets throughout Kauai are on various days- you can check online for a current schedule. You will find all kinds of tropical fruits, veggies and prepared foods, gifts, flowers etc. Our favorite beaches are Hanalei Village beach, where there is swimming, boogie boarding, surfing, kyacking, etc., for people of all ages and you can park level to the beach with a lifeguard. Also Anini Beach is good for snorkeling. And there is snorkeling behind the Hanalei Bay Resort or the new under construction One Hotel Princeville, stairs to the beach are to the left of the hotel. Tunnels Beach just before the end of the road also has remarkable snorkeling. The Smith’s Family Luau in Wailua State Park is beautiful with a buffet, but outside show. Reservations are hard to get in advance because of the 50% occupancy limit now, but beautiful area and outside show. Making advance reservations is recommended. You can look at their menus on line and hours which change often due to Pandemic restrictions. Currently they have reduced occupancy to 50% inside in restaurants, but most have outside dining. I like the following restaurants and you can Google them as to their hours and some use Yelp for reservations or Open Table if you can’t get them on the phone: Hanalei Village Ama (Has great Ramen and other meals) Sitting is all outside under roof Barracuda (Great appetizers, small plates, and meals) Outside and Inside Seating Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant (Inside and Outside Dining) Pricey Restaurant great but we prefer picking up their fresh and fish or Poki in the rear at their fish market and bring it home and Grill at Home Chicken in a Barrel (Great Chicken and BBQ ribs) Outside dining and great for take out to Beach or Home North Shore Grill and Sushi Bar - Good Sushi Great Food Trucks – Morning and Afternoon Hanalei Bread Company - Great for Coffee and Bread to bring home Princeville B’s Kitchen (Great Italian, contemporry food, Pizza) Inside Dining Tiki Aniki (Inside and Outside Dining) Variety of Great Choices Happy Talk Bar and Appetizers and Small Plates (Great View and Located in Hanalei Bay Resort close by you could walk to as well in about 20 minutes) Kilauea Kilauea Bakery & Pizza Great Pizza, Baked Goods, Soups, Paninis, and coffee shop (no reservations needed) Kilauea Fish Market Lihue Dukes Restaurant (Downstairs is great on the Beach with small plates, bar, Music and also upstairs more fine dining) Grocery Stores Foodland in Princeville – Largest Grocery Store (Ask for Makai Card and Register for discounts) Kilauea General Store Great Organic Food, Health Foods, Fresh Fish and Meat and has a lunch dining area Big Save in Hanalei Costco in Lihue not far from airport

Kauai critters

Geckos are considered house guardians in Kauai, working full time eating insects-mosquitos, they are inside and outside our home. They are harmless, they chirp and make a tsk, tsk sound. Super hard to catch. Unfortunately, they leave little poop droppings. Mosquitos can be everywhere, especially along trails. They come out more in the evening at our home on the lanai, best to keep screen doors always shut. Cockroaches are a huge gross nuisance all over the island. We do our best to minimize them. Please help by being very careful to clean up all food items, dirty dishes etc.
