Sightseeing

This would be an entire day trip. It is a nature reserve. A 20 minute boat trip. All boats go from the harbour in Peniche. This would need to be booked in advance and the weather does impact on the trips due to the condition of the Atlantic. Pack a picnic and take the tour of the caves. A great day out.

All of Obidos has been declared a national monument. It is known as the "Wedding Present Town" because it was a gift King Dinis gave to Queen Isabel on their wedding day in 1282, but that alone is not what makes it such an extraordinarily romantic place -- what make it one of Europe's most romantic medieval villages are its incredibly picturesque cobblestone streets lined with colorful houses filled with geraniums and bougainvillea, Gothic doorways and windows, whitewashed churches, flowerpots and dazzling tiles -- all encircled by the walls of a 12th century castle. Scaling its 13m (45ft)-high medieval walls is the best way to admire this picture postcard-perfect place. Plenty of eateries!

Buddha Eden is an amazing place to visit. This is the largest oriental garden in Europe. The oriental garden with around 35 hectares of land was created by the owner of Loridos as a reaction to the destruction of the Buddhas of Banyan. From Buddhas, pagodas, terracotta statues and the various carefully-placed sculptures which can be found throughout the gardens, it is estimated that some six thousand tons of marble and granite were used to create this monumental work of art. There is the Loridos winery next-door.

This is a beautiful place, steeped in history. A nice day trip with lunch at one of the many restaurants. Founded by the first Portuguese king in 1153, the Cistercian Alcobaça Monastery (Portuguese: Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaça) was one of the richest and most prestigious monasteries in medieval Europe. Its church was the first building in Portugal to adopt the Gothic style and was (and still is!) the largest church in the country.

Caldas da Rainha is a lovely town known for its old connection with the Portuguese Queen, Dona Leonor. Of particular interest is the lovely República Square that still boasts many of its 19th century buildings and is also known as “Praça da Fruta” (Fruit Square). Every morning there is a vegetable and fruit open air market. Shopping streets feed of this square. The D. Carlos I Park has tennis courts and a pond where you can rent boats. This wonderful park gives access to the wonderful José Malhoa Museum from the 19th century, with important collections of Portuguese art.
