San Pedro - on Ambergris Caye, Belize

San Pedro Town – is the only town on the island of Ambergris Caye. It is about one and a half miles long and in some places about a mile wide.  Its atmosphere is that of a small bustling fishing village, and is home to the majority of the island's population as well as a majority of the restaurants, bars, clubs and hotels on the island.  Visitors will most likely find what they need within walking distance. The town is clustered with wooden houses, some with Mexican decor, other Caribbean, and some still remain with the English colonial architecture.  Gift shops, boutiques, bars, cafes, and restaurants adorn Front and Middle streets (now named Barrier Reef & Pescador Drive).  A short walk in town and you'll feel the friendliness of the people and witness the ease of their lifestyles as they go through daily life.  Bare feet, tee-shirts, and shorts is the typical island dress code. The people of the island are call "Sanpedranos" and speak English, Spanish, Creole, and Maya all at the same time, making it their own island dialect.  They are proud of their heritage and are willing to share it with tourists.  Before tourism picked up in the eighties, the islanders were mostly Mestizos (Maya-Spanish).  Today they share their island with the Creole, Maya, Central American refugees, and Americans that have made San Pedro their new home. The evenings on the island are a social event.  You will find tourists and islanders at different bars and restaurants listening to reggae and Latin music and sharing the day's adventures.  For those that like to take a day off from driving, day tours can be arranged to the various Maya archaeological sites and Belize's lush rain forest.  For those who just want to relax, a day on the sandy beach, may be all that is needed. The water off the island is iridescent blue and immediately accessible to the residents and guests.  A cooling trade wind sweeps in front the northeast much of the time, keeping insect pests at bay.  A variety of food and drink is available, and some of the country's best cooks are happy to prepare fresh seafood exactly the way you like it.

Sightseeing & Things To Do

TOP TOURIST ATTRACTION - On Ambergris Caye (Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley). HOL CHAN MARINE RESERVE - Has been noted as being some of the best snorkeling in the world. Belize is well-known for its most beautiful and intact marine sites, located on the second largest barrier reef in the world. This is truly an unforgettable experience. If this is your first time to Belize, make sure your family gets to experience this tour, it will be one you will soon not forget. The reef is protected by the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, and is comprised of seven protected areas. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve is one of the seven protected areas. The marine reserve is located four (4 ) miles south of San Pedro, off the coast of Ambergris Caye. First established in 1987, today Hol Chan measures more than 13,000 acres and is divided into four distinct marine zones: Zone A – Hol Chan Cut – anchor point for the reserve, many coral formations, & sea life live here. Zone B – Sea Grass Beds – 1,000 of species use the sea grass as a habitat to hide from predators. Zone C – Mangroves – closer to shore, these salt-resistant tree roots, are a habitat for juvenile fish. Zone D – Shark Ray Alley - a natural cut in the reef, with a white sandy sea floor. According to Skin Diver Magazine, Shark Ray Alley (Zone D) has been declared one of the seven best animal dives in the Caribbean. Hol Chan is a Mayan word, meaning “Little Channel”. The Hol Chan Channel is the most often visited area in the reserve. This channel differs from other channels off Ambergris, due to its greater depth and nearly vertical sides which are partially covered with live corals and interspersed with caverns. The marine park is protected from commercial fishing and industrial exploitation, allowing hundreds of aquatic species to flourish here, including three kinds of coral, anemones and a colorful assortment of fauna, two species of sea turtle, large schools of fish, like groupers, sting rays, and nurse sharks. SHARK RAY ALLEY - For several years, local fishermen often cleaned their catch in this area, (located just inside the reef), to the south of Ambergris Caye. When fishermen noticed that their activity had attracted Nurse Sharks and several Southern Sting Rays, they reported this information to the dive operators in San Pedro, who then dispatched some divers to investigate. What they found was a bonanza, and “Shark-Ray” Alley quickly became a very popular dive site. This is a “must see” for anyone looking to experience the Belize Barrier Reef. Shark Ray Alley is located within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, has been designated as “Zone D”. Its only about 15 minutes south of San Pedro by boat. Shark Ray Alley has a maximum depth of 30 feet and has excellent visibility. You can almost always see all species of fish, including jacks, groupers, snappers, parrot fish, angel fish, barracuda, eels, spider crabs, lobster, and nurse sharks. Divers are occasionally cautioned regarding the currents. As soon as your boat arrives in the area, you will notice a number of dark shadows in the shallow (eight foot deep) waters. These are the sharks and rays that hear the boat approaching, and begin to gather in search of a few scrapes of fish. These creatures have a great tolerance for divers and seem to enjoy the human interaction. The rays, which have a “wing-span” of two to four feet, swim directly towards the divers, inviting them to reach out and stroke their wings (although its best not to touch them). The gentle Nurse Sharks average four to six feet in length, and show no fear of humans and will often swim right up to snorkelers. It is best to keep a distance and not touch them.

This is a very popular tour, for those looking to relax and soak up a little sun. It’s a great tour for families looking for something to do together, and grandparents get a kick out of watching from the side. This tour leaves the dock about 8:00-8:30 in the morning. You then leisurely spend the morning sailing along the second largest barrier reef in the world, making our way to Caye Caulker (a sister island). While aboard, enjoy some local tropical Caribbean music, cold refreshments, and fresh fruit. If you so choose, the catamaran can stop at Shark Ray Alley, where everyone (who desires can get into the water) and swim with the nurse sharks and sting rays. This is an exhilarating tour, we recommend not missing this stop. There are not many places in the world, where you can swim next to nurse sharks, in a relaxed natural environment. Once back on board, rinse off with fresh water, as we set sail for Caye Caulker. Upon arriving at Caye Caulker, you will be given a chance to disembark the vessel and take a leisurely stroll through town. Feel free to stop and grab a bite to eat and do a little window shopping. About 1-1/2 to 2 hours later, you will make your way back to the boat, for a leisurely sail back to Ambergris Caye. The sail back to San Pedro is very relaxing, and you will be able to enjoy several complimentary rum punches along the way. We should be back to the island about 4:00-4:30, giving you enough time to rest and spend the rest of the evening doing what you like.

DIVE THE BLUE HOLE - off Ambergris Caye. Rated one of the best dives in the world by Jacques Cousteau. The Blue Hole is located in the center of Lighthouse Reef Atoll (a circular coral reef), approximately 1,000-feet in diameter, dropping over 400-feet into an incredible cavern. It is filled with giant stalactites and awe inspiring natural formations. Your first dive will take you to the Blue Hole itself, your second dive will be at Half Moon Caye, and your third dive will be at “The Aquarium” (all located within the Lighthouse Reef Atoll). If you are an experienced diver, wishing to scratch something off your “bucket-list”, then this is the tour for you. The Great Blue Hole is one of the most popular dive sites in Belize. You leave the dock at approximately 6:00-6:30 a.m., the boat ride will take about 2-1/2 to 3 hours, to arrive at your destination. Depending on weather conditions, you will begin the dive either on the north or south side. Staying reasonably close to the wall, will assist with orientation. The site can look imposing to even the most experience divers, so listen carefully to the safety briefing and stick close to your guide. Diving the South Side - If you dive the south side, you will approach the shallowest cave systems at about 100ft. You will notice that the angle of the wall changes, resulting in an overhang burdened with stalactites some of which are more than 3 feet in diameter and up to 20 feet in length. Fallen stalactites litter the lower ledge of the cave some 50ft below where stalagmites grow upwards (like a set of rotten teeth), as if to complete a grotesque subterranean shark's mouth. Below this is an entrance to a cavern system which adds an eerie feel to this already atmospheric dive. Diving the North Side - The north side is similar to the south with stalactite formations at 100-140ft deep but (unlike the south side), there is no lower ledge of stalagmites here, just the upper 'jaw' of stalactites hanging over the sunken karst abyss. The bottom is another 260+ft below and very little exploration has been done down there. Apparently it's just a large mound of sand and other fallen debris that has accumulated over the years.

Barbecue wouldn't be barbecue without Robyn behind the grill.  They serve an assortment of local dishes.  Many of our guests, absolutely love this place. I've been told he has the best BBQ chicken on the island.

GREAT FOOD TOUR FOR KIDS - On Ambergris Caye. On this tour you get to learn how they make chocolate in Belize and then the best part, getting to taste test all the different chocolates. Belize Chocolate Company is an award winning craft bean to bar chocolate making company based in Belize. We think we may be one of a kind in the world, as our 'factory' is directly on the beach on an island in Belize, where the Maya arguably created 'chocolate'. Another unique quality is that we make our chocolate in the country where the beans come from. Many other micro-batch companies import their beans from abroad. We use 100% Belizean ingredients: cacao beans from the Toledo District, sugar from Orange Walk.  We make a signature 70% dark chocolate, called Kakaw and add other Belizean ingredients to make different bars - including orange, cacao nibs, chili, and nibs.
