A Dubrovnik in miniature, Korčula’s well-preserved Old Town Renaissance Dalmatian architecture is a marvel to behold. You can eat and drink at the cafes and restaurants around the towns periphery in the shade of old windswept Mediterranean pines, visit the many shops in the interior of the town, and even catch a drink at the top of one of the city wall towers. Make sure you catch the Moreška dancers and watch as they whirl and clash, reenacting a Medieval battle for the rescue of a captured maiden.

Originally settled by the lost tribe of Illyrians a half a millennium before the arrival of the Croatians, Lumbarda is the oldest settlement on the island of Korčula with a history stretching over 2000 years past. Lumbarda is best known for its autochthonous Grk white wine fermented from grapes of the same name which are only grown in a 40 hectare area surrounding the town. Past the fields of grapes is the island’s largest sandy beach, Vela Pržina, and the eastern-most point of the island, Ražnjić, with a stunning view down the coast towards Dubrovnik.

Žrnovska was historically a small fishing settlement, acting as the associated port of the inland agricultural town Žrnovo. The bay is deep enough for tall, multiple-masted sailboats and is shielded from the stronger winds that blow down between the island and the peninsula, making for crystal clear snorkeling and diving waters. The water circulates slower in the bay as well, allowing it to warm up very nicely over the course of the day.

Sightseeing

Kočje is a gorgeous protected park of old trees and karst formations about a 15 minute walk from downtown Žrnovo. The road to it is single-lane and there are not many parking spaces there, so it might be best to park in Brdo when the road is still paved and walk the remaining distance. Incredible hilltop views of Pelješac on the way as well.

The island of Vrnik has been quarried for its exceptional limestone since Roman times. Some of its limestone was even shipped over to America and included in the construction of the White House. You can reach the island just by swimming a little over 100m, or ask one of the boat rental agencies in town to take you there. There are even a couple of restaurants on the island that are open during the summer.

The easternmost point of the island of Korčula, Ražnjić is a great place to absorb the panoramic views of the Dalmatian coast. The gravel road has some holes in it, but if you go slow, it should be easy. There is plenty of parking. A wonderful place to visit on a stormy or windy day as the waves that gather there can be many meters high.

Beaches

Bačva or "Barrel" Beach gets its name from a sea-eroded karstic formation along its western edge. Truly one of the island's greatest natural wonders, it has a cave-like shape which you can swim up to and explore. Someone even poured a concrete bath inside the cave along the lines of the ancient Roman seaside baths!
