Great icecreams, our favourites are the ice cream made of violets and the pistaccio ice cream. Try also the “horchata” (a refreshment typical from Valencia made of tiger nut milk).

Arts & Culture

These are some of our favourite museums, but Madrid has many museums choices. Many also have the option to visit them for free at certain days and / or hours. Just ask us.
My favourite museum. The museum contains important collections of valuable works from the prehistoric period to the nineteenth century, with a focus on Iberian work. Major categories include jewellery, small bronzes, both ecclesiastical and domestic silver, ceramics, carved ivory, and numismatics. Objects come not only from Iberia but also from major centers of medieval artistry, including Limoges and Egypt. While the Renaissance is especially well represented, the collection features important early medieval objects, including Visigothic work, and works crafted by Iberia's ancient Celtic culture.

It houses the art and historical object collections of Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, 17th Marquis of Cerralbo, who died in 1922. The museum, which is housed in the former residence of its founder, opened in 1944. The building was built in the 19th century, according to Italian taste, and it was luxuriously decorated with baroque furniture, wall paintings and expensive chandeliers. It retains to a large extent its original aesthetics

With over 1,600 paintings, it was once the second largest private collection in the world after the British Royal Collection. A competition was held to house the core of the collection in 1987–88 after Baron Thyssen, having tried to enlarge his Museum in Lugano(Villa Favorita), searched for a location in Europe. The Thyssen-Bornemisza fills the historical gaps in its counterparts' collections: in the Prado's case this includes Italian primitives and works from the English, Dutch and German schools, while in the case of the Reina Sofia it concerns Impressionists, Expressionists, and European and American paintings from the 20th century.

The museum is mainly dedicated to Spanish art. Highlights of the museum include excellent collections of Spain's two greatest 20th-century masters, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. Certainly, the most famous masterpiece in the museum is Picasso's painting Guernica. Along with its extensive collection, the museum offers a mixture of national and international temporary exhibitions in its many galleries, making it one of the world's largest museums for modern and contemporary art.

Following the example of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, it illustrates the evolution of industrial or "minor arts", including furniture, ceramics, glass, and textiles. The collections emphasize the 16th and 17th centuries in particular; its collection contains approximately 70,000 pieces. Its 62 exhibition rooms are within a palace near the Jardines del Retiro de Madrid.

Located in the center of Madrid, the royal botanical garden gives visitors the chance to enjoy the peace and quiet of being immersed in nature. While the garden has species dating back more than two centuries for visitors to enjoy, it is also the home to both researchers and botanists. A great collection of plants and flowers from the Americas and the Pacific, including Europa's most ancient magnolia.

Upon entering the station, the traveller will be surprised to find a tropical garden surrounded by iron and glass. The former Atocha building for travellers was converted into a tropical garden in an attempt to enhance the station when it was reopened to house the High Speed train (AVE). The station’s metal and glass structure covering the platforms made its easy to use it as a greenhouse with ponds. The garden is filled with several thousand plants, including 260 different species from America, Asia, and Australia.
