Places to relax

Wiveton Hall was featured in the TV show 'Normal for Norfolk'. It is a gorgeous place to go of an evening as it looks across the marshes out to sea. They are open for outdoor eating (limited menu) and drinks. You sit in meadowland accompanied by the sounds of live Spanish guitar. It is very calm and one of my favourite places to be.

The heath is amazing. You can hire bikes there and take a picnic, or eat in the 'village square' cafe. Sometimes there is free entertainment in the evenings (a band or singer), and if you pay for a day pass you can use the swimming pool and jacuzzi.

Sightseeing

Just outside of Sheringham is this lovely area of woodland. It is the 'pine' that gives Sheringham its tagline 'Twixt pine and sea'. You can park up for free and go wandering. Why not take a picnic.

The beach has sand when the tide is out - don't be fooled by the fact that when the tide's in only pebbles are visible! The boulders are not local - they were shipped in from Norway as coastal defense a few decades ago. Locals have grown rather fond of them. (They can be dangerous to climb on.) The beaches are very clean - award winning. There can be currents but swimming is safe. Always walk out, and swim back to shore (i.e. don't swim out as the depth does change quite quickly). If you prefer, you can stick to the beach below the lifeguard hut (turn left from the bottom of the high street). I recommend trying cockles or muscles from 'Joyful West's' little shack at the bottom of the high street and eating them whilst walking along the promenade. Turn left and you'll end up at the old lifeboat house. Turn right and you'll go past the Sheringham museum and on past the second fisherman's slope (still very much in use). By that time you might fancy a delicious sweet or savory pancake from the waffle hut at the other end of the prom. Sunsets from the prom are legendary and rival anything on the front of an Ibiza chillout album!

Wonderful old steam trains that run from Sheringham, via Weybourne, to Holt and back (about 20 minutes each way). You can stop off in the Georgian town of Holt for lunch and a mooch around the markets and antique shops, and get back on a steam train home. Toot toot!

Beautiful old hall, now doing guided tours of the interior again. They are also serving a lovely selection of street food in the courtyard area. It's on the way to Wells - so you could make a day of it in that area.

This is the wilder side of North Norfolk. You can take a boat trip to see the seal colonies. Cley and Blakeney have become known for their artistic and chef/food scenes. They are worth pottering around.

Great for children

You just have to see 'George' the turtle - he is superb. This centre is in the seaside town of Hunstanton, which is very attractive in itself - a grand Victorian seafront. You could also continue on to Sandringham and plan a day around those activities.

A very imaginative woodland theme park, with huge 'skywalk' climbing areas, massive slides, zipwires, a boat ride, and little characters in the trees. A great day out for families; a firm favourite with my daughter!
