The Food Scene--Here are some of Nancy and Wes' favorite Kerrville restaurants

There are many good restaurants in the area. Here we highlight some that are at the top of our list for dependably good food.
If you enjoy Thai food, this place is a must. It is one of our favorite restaurants. It has outdoor seating overlooking the Guadalupe River.

Located outside of Kerrville, this is a great restaurant serving breakfast and lunch in a beautiful location. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. (No alcohol) The deserts are unbelievable, so save room. The restaurant is attached to the Camp Verde General store, a building with a rich history that included camels. Lots of cute items are for sale in the store, many with a Texas flair. (Across the highway is a herd of bison, including white ones). UPDATE: They do not have table service now (lack of staffing?), so you have to order at the counter and wait for your name to be called. You can still sit in the dining room.

This restaurant is located outside of Kerrville. It has live music on the weekend--not too loud and located in one of the two rooms. The food is good and priced right with specials during the week (https://www.shopsattheridge.com/cafe-at-the-ridge). The deserts are homemade and delicious. There is a small bakery in the restaurant as well. Attached to the restaurant is a garden/nursery and gift shop.

We like this place when we are not sure of what we want to eat. There is a long menu that ranges from Mexican food (it's okay) to steaks (good) and chicken fried steak (yum, according to Wes). They also have some large salads. It is set next to the Guadalupe River with lots of window, so the views are great. The interior is not especially cozy or romantic--it's your basic eatery. It is very popular and so there is often a wait list during peak dining hours. You can eat outdoors overlooking the Guadalupe river. https://billygenes.com/

This small Korean restaurant is one of our favorite lunch spots. The food is delicious and spicy. You can eat inside the cafe (located inside the lobby of a large building in the historic district) or outside. I love the bulgogi. Check with them for their hours. I think that are open some evenings for dinner in addition to lunch. https://www.facebook.com/yeoboscafe/

This is our go-to place for Mexican food and margaritas. The place is huge. The decor is supposed to replicate a Mexican village even with a painted evening sky. It's noisy--always lots of people. We love to eat the red snapper. You get good sized portions for reasonable prices. The margaritas are good. They also have outdoor seating. https://www.mamacitas.com/

The Broken Stone is the name of this restaurant (not 809 Sidney Baker). It has great lunch specials and pizza. They do not serve alcohol, but you can bring your own. Their side salads are really big. The pizza crusts are thin and home-made.

This is a nice Kerrville brewery with decent food and live music on weekends. There is inside and outside seating and a cafe attached to it that has good coffee drinks but no food, although you can order food from the brewery.

Stay alert while driving in the area for two reasons:

1. There are many exotic game ranches in the area and you may see some strange/beautiful animals near the fences (fences are unusually high, often an indication of a "special" ranch). We have seen kangaroos and giraffes in addition to multiple varieties of antelopes. Some of the ranches, such as the YO Ranch, offer tours. 2. There are lots of deer racing across the backroads and highways. They are cute but dangerous.

Hiking Opportunities

We now have a short hiking trail (slightly over 1/2 mile) on our 11 acre property. Also, there are numerous state parks (Enchanted Rock, Lost Maples, Garner) that offer a variety of hiking opportunities. it's best to make reservations--even for a one day hike. There is a pleasant 7 mile River Walk along the Guadalupe River that you can access at several places right in Kerrville. At the end of the trail, at Schreiner Univerity, there's a new "refreshment" venue called Trailhead Beer Garden (beer, wine, coffee, etc.) They also have music most weekend afternoons/evenings.

Wine Tasting Tours

There are many great wine tours that leave from Fredricksburg. There is one company that will pick you up in Kerrville and take you to the wineries. They might even pick you up at the Curious Fox for an additional fee. Hill Country Grape Wine Tour: https://www.texasgrapeswinetours.com/
