This Island has a long military history of protecting the harbor from invaders and there are many wonderful histories which capture those stories. Remnants of the military are abundant in now privately held military housing; even former fortifications are now single family residences. Many of these historic homes have withstood the test of time and ravaging weather.

Taking a leisure walk along the battery gives you fantastic views of the harbor and the elegant southern style homes (mansions along the water front. Plus there is plenty of historic significant to the area. If it's summer time you might want to bring a hat and sunscreen because there is no shade along the battery itself, until you arrive at White Point Garden where there are plenty of large Live Oaks to shade you.

In the heart of the lowcountry, there is a place where flowers bloom by the acre, and history lives on every corner. Where World-class cuisine is served with a side of Southern charm, sweet tea is measured by the gallon, and it’s a short ride to rainbow Row and the historic plantations. The Sweet Tea Trail was created for our visitors to fully experience Summerville as the Birthplace of Sweet Tea. We hope all that embark on the trail have fun and explore the shops, sites, sips and tastes that make life in Summerville so sweet.

Farming has been a part of Boone Hall Plantation for over three centuries. We’re very proud of that heritage. There aren’t many farms left in this country that can make that claim. The agricultural arm of the plantation today is known as Boone Hall Farms. It is located on 120 acres of some of the richest coastal farmland in the state. There’s something about that black dirt combined with today’s safe farming practices and a staff whose dedication is second to none…that comes together to produce some of the healthiest freshest produce available anywhere. We work closely with agents from the Clemson Extension Service to grow a wide variety of produce in the spring, summer, and fall that have become essential parts of family dinner tables all over the Lowcountry.
