Neighborhoods

Windy Hill sits on the outskirts of the small town of Mint Hill, population around 26,000. Established in 1750, the town celebrates its European heritage each year with the Scottish Festival and Highland Games. The Mint Hill Historical Society oversees a living history museum, complete with an assay house (gold was once minted in Charlotte), a country doctor's office, and other historic buildings. The red-roofed building shown here is an authentic schoolhouse, and before COVID, the Charlotte Folk Society gathered each Saturday morning to make music on traditional instruments. They're a lively bunch. The town may be small, but it has a locally-owned weekly newspaper and independent printing press. People are catching on to what a fun part of the county this is, thanks in large part to an abundance of small businesses. We have a local coffee house (it's really a house--with a tractor parked out front), local bakery (Daphne's), a store that sells horse feed (Woof'n Hoof--look for Quick Silver out front), numerous gift shops, a barber shop, local art displays at the Mint Hill Fine Arts Center, a bar for craft beer (Pour 64 with 40 taps), a wine room with outdoor seating (Vintner's Hill Wine Bar & Bistro), a library, banks, and yes, a funeral home.

Outdoor Hikes

Although this park is in Cabarrus County, it's an easy 20 minute drive from Windy Hill. Well maintained, it's a lovely setting for walks or to sit and read.

This is a fabulous new park with four miles of hiking trails through woodlands. It's less than 15 minutes away in an easy-to-find location. Trails are wide and flat, despite being in the woods. We don't know how they avoided roots! The park trails opened in January 2021, and the nature center will open once COVID restrictions are lifted. This is a wonderful place to walk in a quiet, peaceful setting.

Shopping

This little gallery has just about anything a Southern gal could ask for. Clothes, jewelry, shoes, sparkly bath soaps and custom soy candles. There's even a Scottish shop in the back with DMC embroidery thread by the skein. Upstairs is a vintage record shop and maze of used books. Monograms? Got 'em. Umbrellas, kids' clothes, custom bibs, house flags...lots of stuff by well-organized vendors.

Sightseeing

This delightful "museum" is a collection of historic buildings. Located near the town center, it began when a country doctor's office went up for sale. Since then, numerous old buildings have been moved to the site, lovingly placed in an intriguing setting. If you love history, put a stroll through on your calendar.
