City/town information

Get to know the city known as both "the Pearl of the South" and "Museum City." Known as the “Pearl of the South,” the Ciudad Señorial of Ponce is located on Puerto Rico’s south coast, and is distinguished by its historical and cultural attractions. It is the second-largest city on the Island (after San Juan) and it’s also known as the “Museum City” due to its abundance of museums. If you're visiting from the U.S. mainland, you can check flying options to Mercedita International Airport, where a handful of domestic flights land daily. If you meet a local — who are affectionately known as “the lions” — don’t be surprised by their exceptionally vocal pride in their hometown.

La Guancha is one of the hottest hang out spots in Ponce, literally, it's right next to the beach. Take a trip to this boardwalk facing the Caribbean Sea to find an array of fun things to do. Start by having a meal at some of the kiosks turned restaurants, and then have a drink at one of the bars. You can also buy some seeds and feed the birds, fish, and pelicans that are always around the boardwalk grounds. Finish the visit by going up the Guancha Lighthouse and enjoying the view.

Museum

The Museo de Arte de Ponce’s internationally renowned collection is comprised of more than 4,500 works of art from many cultures, dating from the ninth century C.E. to the present. This dynamic, wide-ranging collection includes paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, drawings, decorative arts, pre-Hispanic and African objects, Puerto Rican folk art, contemporary ceramics, video, and sound art. Two of the collection’s main strengths are nineteenth-century English painting and seventeenth-century Baroque painting. For more than forty years, museum founder Luis A. Ferré acquired works of the highest quality, in support of his vision to present museum visitors with an abridged yet richly illuminating history of European art. The Museo de Arte de Ponce’s collection also features important works by artists from Puerto Rico and Latin America, creating a unique dialogue between the Old and New Worlds. Today, the museum’s collection is part of the island’s legacy to Puerto Rico and the world. We invite you to experience and explore the breadth and depth of our collection, from Sir Peter Paul Rubens’ Head of the Oldest of the Three Kings (ca. 1620) to Roy Lichtenstein’s impressive 25-foot-tall sculpture Brushstrokes in Flight (1994), acquired in 2010 and installed on the museum’s front lawn.

Isla Cardona is just an 8-minute boat ride off of Ponce, but it offers a beautiful beach, nice snorkeling, some trails to explore, and a lighthouse. Unless you have your own boat or jetski, the trip offered by Waterland Adventures is your best way to get there. Isla Cardona is a tiny island located just over one mile south of La Guancha in Ponce (on the south coast). This dry island offers visitors a few diversions besides a beautiful white sand beach. There are trails for exploring, a lighthouse you can enter, and beautiful coral reefs right off shore for snorkeling. The island is administered by the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources (DRNA).
