The City of Newark has a variety of excellent parks and bike trails. Our most scenic park is White Clay Creek, which is a few miles north of the city on Rte. 896. Within the city limits, The Pomeroy Trail (north-south) and the James F. Hall Trail (east-west are excellent for a jog, walk, or bike ride. To pick up the Hall Trail, follow Apple Rd south until it ends (Apple is just a few blocks west of the Hobbit House). Take the trail east, along the railroad tracks. You will eventually reach a Y in the trail. If you want to walk up to the UD North Campus dorms, take the Pomeroy Trail to the left. If you stay on the Hall Trail, you will end up on the east side of town, on Library Ave (Rte. 72). The Hall Trail is about 2 miles long. The Pomeroy Trail is longer, and will take you past the dorms and eventually into White Clay State Park.

Lum’s Pond is 15 minutes south of the Campus on Rte 896. They also have a zipline park, which is a lot of fun. We suggest calling ahead for reservations.

Over the border in Maryland on the Chespeake, there are a few wineries. This is our favorite for dry reds. Bring a deck of cards, or just hang out with some friends. During warm weather, there are great views of the Chesapeake. During colder weather, they have a spacious sitting area with large tables. Good sandwiches and charcuterie plates. Gorgeous view of the vineyard going down the hill to the water. Wines only by the bottle during COVID. They do a nice job of socially distancing all tables.

If you are a fan of excellent steak, check out a restaurant in Chesapeake City called Prime 225. While on the expensive side, it is worth it! Phone: 410.885.7009. You will need a reservation.
Delaware is of course known for its beaches, and that reputation is well-deserved. Rehoboth has unique vibe, that is welcoming to families. Lots to do, including miniature golf, fishing, and of course the beach. Our personal favorite town is Lewes (pronounced “Louis”), which is more sedate, but very relaxing. If you have bikes (or want to rent them), we suggest the bike trail from Lewes to the Rehoboth outlets. Very nice (and very flat!) ride. On the way down, make a stop at Dogfish Head’s production facility in Milton, Delaware. Sam Calagione took this brewery from a ten-gallon system in his apartment to one of the most awarded and innovative breweries in the US. The tour is great.

If you need urgent care, turn right out of our driveway onto Orchard Rd. At the light, turn left on to Park Place. At the main intersection, bear right onto College Ave. After you go over the bridge, look to the right. You will see the STAR campus complex. Go past the first entrance and turn right on to Discovery. The urgent care facility is in the main building.
Hospital
For emergencies, the closest large hospital is Christiana Care. Follow the above urgent care directions, but do not turn on Discovery. Stay on the road until you get to the Rte 4 intersection, about a quart

Grocery and Local Shopping
3 blocks from us is a strip mall that has a CVS, a liquor store, Margherita’s pizza, an Asian restaurant, an Anywhere Fitness, and an art store. Turn left out of the driveway. Take the first left on Winslow. Go 2 blocks, cross over into the parking lot of the strip mall.
About 5 minutes there is a shopping center with an Acme, a Home Depot, 2 banks (WSFS and M&T), a few restaurants, a great bagel shop, a Wine/Painting place, a drug store, a pet store, etc. Turn right out of our driveway. At the light, turn right on Park Place. Go to the end and turn left on Elkton Rd. About 1 mile.

Liquor Store – our favorite is State line, on Elkton Blvd. They have an inspired collection of beer, a nice selection of wine, and a nice cheese section. You can mix and match individual craft beer bottles/cans to make your own 6-pack.
Art Store: Jerry’s Artorama, 2.5 blocks from our house.
