The Roman Forum of Thessaloniki is the ancient Roman-era forum (or Agora) of the city, located at the upper side of Aristotelous Square. It is a large two-terraced forum featuring two-storey stoas, dug up by accident in the 1960s. The forum complex also boasts two Roman baths, one of which has been excavated while the other is buried underneath the city, and a small theater which was also used for gladiatorial games. Although the initial complex was not built in Roman times, it was largely refurbished in the 2nd century. It is believed that the forum and the theater continued to be used until at least the 6th century http://www.inthessaloniki.com/en/roman-forum-roman-agora

The Roman past of Thessaloniki lies at the heart of the modern city! The Galerian Complex in the center of Thessaloniki is one of the biggest and most impressive archaeological destinations in Greece! The Arch of Galerius (Kamara) is perhaps the most distinctive and interesting roman structure of Thessaloniki. It is also one of the most popular destinations of the city along with the White Tower for both locals and tourists. The arch was commissioned as a triumphal monument by emperor Galerius in order to celebrate the victorious campaign against the Sassanid Persians in 298 A.D. and the capture of their capital Ctesiphon. http://www.inthessaloniki.com/en/arch-of-galerius

Built in 306 A.D. by the romans, Rotunda is one of the oldest religious sites of the city. After a number of long devastating wars, the romans decided to divide the Empire into 4 regions, thus leading to the creation of a new form of leadership, the Tetrarchy. The administrative needs of the Tetrarchy led Galerius to the construction of the Imperial complex in Thessaloniki because of its importance as one of the capitals. Original intensions were predicting its use as a mausoleum, although many archaeologists believe it was initially used as a roman temple. The dimensions are quite impressive! http://www.inthessaloniki.com/en/rotonda

Lake Kerkini in Northern Greece, one of the most important wetlands in Europe, is considered to be one of the top European bird watching destinations. About 300 bird species have been observed here: some of them nestle, some winter, others stop over for rest or food. Among them, the Pelican and the Pygmy Cormorant are threatened with extinction. The area is also one of the most important cormorants’ and herons’ colonies of the Northern Balkan Peninsula. http://kerkini.gr/eng/

The Axios - Loudias - Aliakmonas National Park, in short distance from the urban centre of Thessaloniki, offers great opportunities for walking, bird-watching, photography or simply for getting away from the noise of the city. Each season has something different to offer: in winter, huge flocks of water birds and birds of prey congregate at Nea Agathoupoli, in spring, the forest glades are alive with birdsong and the wild horses come down to the riverbanks, in the summer the coastal area is pleasantly cool and ideal for walking, while autumn is the time to see great flocks of shorebirds in the Kalohori lagoon and the Alyki Kitrous salt works. http://axiosdelta.gr/en/eco-routes/%CF%87%CF%8
