Neighbourhoods

There is a small convenience store 8 mins away, Garth Bluff, on the main road (T13) just south of the junction with US Highway 2, but they only have the bare basics. Rapid River has no grocery store. There is one nice local restaurant, Jacks, with home made food and lovely service. The best place in town is the ice cream place, The Dairy Flo. For shopping and other services you need to drive to Gladstone (20 mins from the house) or Escanaba (30 mins from the house).

Sightseeing

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore - Stunning nature with some of the best hikes in the UP, waterfalls, secluded beaches and stunning panoramic views. Pictured Rocks’ Lakeshore Trail shares a picture-perfect route with a northern stretch of the North Country National Scenic Trail. Pick up the stunningly beautiful trail in Grand Marais, at Twelve Mile Beach, at Miners Castle or in Munising for enjoyable day hikes. Since there are so many great walks to choose from, we have included 3 pages with all the walks in the Pictured Rocks Area. Our favorite hikes are Miners Castle to Miners Beach (2 miles) and Mosquito Falls/Chapel Falls (4-10 miles). All trailheads are in vicinity of Munising, a 50 min. drive but worth the day trip whatever hike you choose! You can also go on a boat or kayaking trip, seeing the amazing pictured rocks from the lake-side. All rentals & departures in/from Munising, which is a cute town worth visiting anyway.

Kitch-iti-kipi is Michigan's largest natural freshwater spring. The name means "big cold spring" in the Ojibwe language. It is also sometimes referred to as the Big Spring. Kitch-iti-kipi, or "Mirror of Heaven" as it is referred to today, is the most significant sacred place of the Native Americans in Upper Michigan. Only 30 min. drive away
