City/town information

Ogunquit (pronounced /o-gun-quit/) was named by the indigenous Abenaki tribe and it means "a beautiful place by the sea". It was first a village within Wells, settled in 1641. Ogunquit separated from Wells in 1980 and received visitors from all the corners of the Earth. Its fame brought joy to all the world and even Stephen King placed part of the action from “The Stand”, published in 1978, in Ogunquit. This raw diamante has flourished from a fishing village in Perkins Cove surrounded by farms and rustic homes, to the sparkling tourist destination it is today. The Ogunquit area has everything for every type of traveler. Theater-lovers flock to the many playhouses for the extended summer stock performances. Visitors rave about the assortment of galleries, boutiques, gift shops, and day spas. Discriminating diners have an abundant selection of fine restaurants to satisfy nearly every taste- including the famous Maine lobster! Recreation enthusiasts love the Ogunquit area because our front yard is an ocean and our backyard is the "Vacationland" known as Maine. You can try deep-sea fishing departing from Perkins Cove, cast a rod into the river, learn about trapping lobster with a licensed captain, take a bicycle ride with a certified cycling coach or play a round of golf at some of New England's top-rated courses. Sailing, sea kayaking, surfing and whale watching are popular activities as well as hiking nearby Mount Agamenticus or the Wells Reserve at Laudhold Farm.
