Details About an hour west of Colorado Springs lies Cripple Creek, a historic mining town that perfectly captures the spirit of the western frontier that shaped the state of Colorado. In its early years, the Cripple Creek was known for its gold, with over 500 mines churning out more than 22 million ounces of gold over two decades. Today, you’ll find treasure of a different sort: rich history, year-round events and fun family attractions. Take one of the most scenic drives in the state (it’s particularly stunning in the fall when the aspens turn) to a sweeping valley dotted with historic structures and grand views. The town has retained many of the storefronts and buildings that were there at its early beginnings, now filled with souvenirs, history, sweet treats and more. On occasion, you can catch a glimpse of the wild donkeys that roam the area and maybe even snap a photo! On one end of town, you’ll find the Mollie Kathleen Goldmine, which allows visitors to descend 1,000 feet underground and ride in a mine cart. Just down the hill, you can take a ride at the Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad, a 45-minute trip through pristine mountains and forest (pro tip, your pup is allowed to ride with you on the train). There’s also the District Museum, which allows you to tour historic buildings and check out antique artifacts, the Jail Museum and the Heritage Center, too. One of Cripple Creek’s most fabulous features is its annual events calendar which is packed with family-friendly activities like the Cripple Creek Ice Festival, Donkey Derby Days and the Top of the World Rodeo. And let’s not forget Gold Rush Days, shows at the Butte Theater, car rallies, motorcycle rallies, music festivals, art shows … For such a little town, Cripple Creek is kind of a big deal. We think you’ll find that this western adventure is well worth the drive all year long and a perfect way to spend a day in the Pikes Peak region. https://www.pikes-peak.com/attractions/historic-cripple-creek/

When people ask us for things to do in Colorado Springs, it’s not because they’re out of options – how could they be in a place this awesome? No, they ask because they’re overwhelmed with the sheer amount of activities, adventures, and attractions available. They’re begging for someone — anyone — to help them narrow it down just a teensy-weensy bit. Luckily, we like to think of ourselves as adventure-saving superheroes, ready to swoop in at a moment’s notice with recommendations, advice, and information. From a locals’ perspective, we’re pretty good at it if we do say so ourselves. Below you’ll find options for spending a day, a week, or (we hope) even longer in our fair city at the foot of Pikes Peak. The Adventure Savers are here, and we’re ready to help you launch your next vacation or staycation in a big way. Let’s go! https://www.pikes-peak.com/attractions/

THE MANITOU CLIFF DWELLINGS ARE COMPRISED OF ANASAZI RUINS THAT DATE BACK 800 TO 1000 YEARS OLD. RELOCATING THE CLIFF DWELLINGS The 40 room site was originally located in McElmo Canyon, which is in the southwest corner of Colorado near Mesa Verde and Dolores. The process of relocating these cliff dwellings began in 1904 and was completed in 1907 when the preserve was opened to the public. Virginia McClurg, the original founder of the Colorado Cliff Dwellers Association, hired William Crosby and the Manitou Cliff Dwellings Ruins Company to begin this process. They wanted to preserve and protect these dwellings from looters and relic pot-hunters. Their company spent many months mapping out the dwellings in McElmo Canyon. Prior to the 1906 Antiquities Act, the Federal Government did not get involved in protecting these historic sites. Virginia McClurg wanted to change this. She and Crosby’s company therefore began a preservation project and acquired the rights to move a portion of the dwellings from McElmo Canyon to Phantom Canyon, later to be renamed Cliff Canyon, here in Manitou Springs. Over a several year period, the ruins from McElmo Canyon were collected, packaged, and finally moved by oxen out of McElmo Canyon to Dolores, Colorado. There, they were loaded and shipped by railroad to Colorado Springs, and finally brought to Cliff Canyon by horse and wagon. Crosby’s men then faithfully reassembled the dwellings in dimension and appearance to those in the four corners region, instead they used a concrete mortar in 1907 as opposed to the adobe mud/clay mortar the Anasazi used. This allows individuals to walk inside and tour through our dwellings. The Manitou Cliff Dwellings is a preserve of these ancient dwellings, here to protect them for future generations to visit. The creation of the Manitou Cliff Dwellings Museum and Preserve was the vision of Virginia McClurg and Harold Ashenhurst. It was undertaken to create a museum that preserves and protects the fine stonework architecture of the Southwestern Indians, which at that time, were unprotected from vandals and artifact hunters. The impact of these careless people threatened to wipe out the great architectural achievements of the Anasazi Indians. In 1907, our preserve was acknowledged by Dr. E. L. Hewett, Director of American Archaeology and father of the Antiquities Act, for its detail of workmanship and educational purpose. Our three story pueblo structure demonstrates the architecture of the Taos Pueblo Indians of New Mexico. These Pueblo Indians are descendants of the Cliff Dwelling Indians belonging to the Anasazi cultural line. This pueblo building was erected at the turn of the century and home to a Native American family of dancers who entertained the tourists for several generations. This Native American family lived in the pueblo as late as 1984. Over the years, the pueblo was expanded into museums of pottery and artifacts. It has since been expanded to include our souvenir shop that offers Native Made pottery, jewelry, and artifacts, as well as Colorado and US made gifts. We welcome you to explore the Anasazi culture and get a “hands on” educational experience, while you are visiting the Pikes Peak region. Details Transport yourself back in time as you enter the swinging doors of the Wild West Ghost Town Museum, where authentic Colorado history awaits your exploration! As a true preservation of the Pikes Peak region’s pioneer past, the Ghost Town Museum is filled with real buildings and artifacts from the old west towns that used to dot this region during the late 1800s and early 1900s. But you won’t have to hike across the countryside to find this amazing piece of history, it’s all been carefully constructed indoors right here in Colorado Springs. Travel down the real wooden promenade and get a peek into snapshots of pioneer life — how the people of the past lived, worked and played. Try your hand at an old-fashioned butter churn or printing press, check out authentic stagecoaches and wagons and explore thousands of other artifacts that are true pieces of Colorado history. Included in your summer admission to the Ghost Town Museum is panning for real gold! From May through September, you can sift through water and silt like the gold prospectors of old, seeking your fortune in the bottom of your metal pan. Even if you don’t manage to find gold, there are other tiny treasures buried in the sand, like tiny minerals! It’s one of the museum’s most loved activities and makes a thrilling activity for kids (and adults). Speaking of kids, the Ghost Town Museum has several antique games and a big shooting gallery where anyone can try their hand at hitting targets. When you’re finished exploring to your heart’s content, the gift shop awaits, packed with old-fashioned candies, snacks, 1800s-style toys and games, sweet jams and other fun items. You can also pick up souvenir coffee cups, t-shirts, jewelry and pottery. Don’t forget to sip on a sarsaparilla while you’re there — it wouldn’t be an authentic wild west experience without it! The Wild West Ghost Town Museum allows you to take a journey to the early years of Colorado’s exciting history without having to travel any further than Colorado Springs. Even better, the indoor location makes it the perfect spot to have fun and beat the summer heat (or winter chill). Come out and see it for yourself! https://www.pikes-peak.com/attractions/ghost-town-museum/

Details No other attraction in the Pikes Peak region captures the fascinating history of Colorado’s Gold Rush days like the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine Tour in Cripple Creek. Step into a true marvel of human engineering as you enter the mine and descend 1,000 feet underground to get a close-up look at how miners once pried precious gold ore from deep beneath the Rocky Mountains. Discovered in 1891, the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine was the first claim to be struck by a woman in the Cripple Creek and Victor gold camp — a true rarity in those days. Named for its discoverer, the mine produced gold for decades, until a lack of ore processing methods in the region made mining too difficult. Today, the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine operates as a tour mine, allowing visitors to learn about mining, geology and Colorado’s early gold rush days. Your exciting tour of this authentic gold mine begins with a 100-story man-skip elevator ride deep below the surface of the earth. You’ll be provided with a hard hat to ensure maximum safety as you are led through the mine by knowledgeable tour guides who will tell you all about the history of the gold mine and the early gold rush years in Colorado. As part of the tour you’ll get to view real gold veins in their natural state, check out a mineral display and examine mining equipment from many different eras. The Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine operated for decades and adapted with the evolution of many mining processes, which means there are lots of different artifacts on display. You’ll also get to ride in an underground tram air locomotive! Above ground, you’ll find even more historic equipment and outbuildings to explore, plus a cool gift shop with fun souvenirs and — for the rock hound in your life — a variety of minerals, jewelry, and, of course, gold! The next time you make your way to Cripple Creek, take a (literal) deep dive into Colorado gold rush history at the unique and fascinating Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine. https://www.pikes-peak.com/attractions/mollie-kathleen-gold-mine/

Details Do you love rodeos, cowboys and the spirit of the Wild West? Then the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy is your next big thrill during your visit to the Pikes Peak region. The colorful history and equally colorful legends of professional rodeo come to life at the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy, where visitors are greeted by the larger than life statue of The Champ, the legendary Casey Tibbs aboard the famed saddle bronc, Necktie. The rodeo holds a special place in the heart of American culture, inspiring songs, movies, books and art. Cowboys and cowgirls are equally treasured, due to their direct impact on the founding of the west and their tireless work to put food on tables at home and around the world. The ProRodeo Hall of Fame is a celebration of all these things, telling their story — and the story of rodeo — in intricately detailed displays. Guests begin their tour in the Hall of Champions, which displays over 300 inductees, including rodeo contestants from bull riding, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, team roping, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, and all-around and also stock contractors, clowns, rodeo notables, livestock, and rodeo committees. For a deep dive into cowboy history, you can also examine displays featuring saddles, chaps, hats and other rodeo equipment, each showing the evolution of riding equipment throughout the years of horsemanship that has helped to found the United States. When you’ve completed your tour, the gift shop is a treasure trove of western and Colorado-themed items that are perfect for fans of western wear, horses, cowboys and cowboy culture. And for those looking for a way to celebrate a family reunion, host a wedding or plan any other sort of event while in Colorado (locals welcome, too)? The ProRodeo Hall of Fame offers lovely event space with access to its beautiful outdoor gardens and fountains (weather permitting). There’s no question that the rodeo and the history of the American cowboy are incredibly exciting. Come experience the fun for yourself at the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and the Museum of the American Cowboy. https://www.pikes-peak.com/attractions/prorodeo-hall-of-fame/

At the North Pole—Santa’s Workshop, Christmas isn’t just a December affair, it’s a state of being that lives on long after the official holiday is over. This enchanting amusement park is packed with holiday cheer and a powerful Christmas spirit that would de-Scrooge even the grumpiest of holiday naysayers. From the moment you ascend the tree-lined roads to Santa’s Workshop entrance, you’ll begin to see why this special attraction has been a favorite of locals and visitors alike for more than 60 years. Unlike it’s city counterparts, the North Pole sits upon a pristine mountainside at the base of Pikes Peak, nestled in the gorgeous Colorado forest and surrounded by great views. But, more than its beautiful location, the North Pole is FUN for everyone who visits, from little ones to grandparents and everyone in between — even those hard-to-impress teens. Nearly two-dozen rides are scattered across this Christmas wonderland, with exciting experiences for every age. Wee ones (and those who like to take it slow) will love the antique carousel and the miniature train, plus a wealth of other kiddie rides that can usually fit mom and dad, too. The thrill seekers of your clan aren’t left out — they’ll scream with joy on the Candy Cane Coaster, the classic Tilt-O-Whirl. And did we forget the giant Ferris wheel overlooking the countryside and the twisty-turns of the striped Peppermint Slide. In addition to the rides, there are daily magic shows, live glass blowing presentations and an arcade with Skee Ball. Yeah, place this is definitely not skimping on the fun. Of course, the North Pole just isn’t the North pole without a very special man. We’re talking about Santa Claus, of course. He and the lovely Mrs. Clause, along with their awesome elf helpers, are in the park every day, waiting to meet and greet their pint-sized fans (and believing adults) and listen to Christmas wishes. A visit just won’t be complete without a visit to his warm and cozy house and snapping a photo for the mantle. And, by the way, Santa’s brought some of his favorite pets for you and the kids to feed, including deer and llamas! Because it’s Christmas every day at the North Pole, you can also find the coolest Christmas-themed gifts around in the park’s adorable village gift shops, including snow globes, ornaments, collectibles and so much more. Be sure to pick up a North Pole ornament for your tree to capture the memory of the fun you and your family will most assuredly have together. You can personalize one with your family name or the name of someone special. There’s even a sweet shop loaded with candy of all kinds and the North Pole’s special homemade fudge. You’re your day is finally done, don’t miss out on the chance to dip your own candle and send a letter from the North Pole Post Office bragging about your exciting day. https://www.pikes-peak.com/attractions/north-pole-santas-workshop/

The hike to the top of Raspberry Mountain is a pleasant six-mile jaunt (round trip) through the Pike National Forest. The trail is wide and smooth, most of it shaded by tall, dark Colorado Spruce. Sentinel Point and the northernmost of the Sibling Spires are visible occasionally about four miles to the south, whetting your appetite for the "Big View" available at the summit when the Crags, Pike's Peak, and the Catamount Reservoirs spread across the horizon's southeastern quadrant. Early morning trekkers will also have the best light for views to the north and west (and will be less likely to get short-changed by storms in the summer). The hike begins with short, steep switchbacks. Then, it levels out through a meadow and gentle forest floors. Eventually, you'll turn right on the forest road after crossing a creek. After a short uphill walk, you turn left, leaving the Ring the Peak trail. From here, it is a relatively intense and primarily uphill climb to the top. Prepare for this hike and check the weather forecast before heading out. The gate to access the trailhead is seasonally closed. Open in summer and closes in winter. The exact dates vary with snowfall.

Over 956 feet above the crashing Arkansas River, the Royal Gorge Bridge — one of the world’s highest suspension bridges — connects visitors from one side of the millions-plus-years-old gorge to the other, where even more adventure awaits. Awe is the closest word we can find to describe what you’ll feel as you take in the staggeringly beautiful views of the gorge and the surrounding region. Of course, you’ll want to bring a camera with extra memory (or film, if you’re old-school) to capture every trip moment. But the views aren’t the only reason to visit. The Royal Gorge Park has fun ways to spend a day, like the thrilling Cloudscraper ZipRider zip line or chill-but-awesome gondola rides across the canyon. And the pulse-pounding Skycoaster helps you make your acquaintance with the Royal Gorge’s steep drop like no other ride can. For the younger set, Tommy Knocker Playland offers climbing structures for unleashing one’s inner mountain goat and a fabulous carousel to spin all your cares away. And don’t miss out on the new water clock by the visitor center, too. It’s fascinating! You can bring lunch from home for enjoying at one of the many picnic areas — or you can leave the cooking to the folks at Café 1230 or the Bridge View BBQ (sometimes you can smell that tasty goodness across the bridge!). Both have hearty and light options so that no one will leave unsatisfied. Oh, and there’s also the Cliff Side patio, where you can enjoy sweet snacks like slushies, cotton candy, or adult beverages. The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park are also known for their summer entertainment. Rock, funk, country … you’ll find several different artists and genres gracing the stage each season, and you’ll love grooving at the theater with a cold drink. Head out and make a day of it. You won’t be sorry you visited the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park — and you certainly won’t be bored! NEW 2019: Via Ferrata, The Iron Road, a mountaineering experience on the gorge walls! Make your reservation to create the most amazing memories!
