The Basel Town Hall (German: Rathaus Basel, locally known as Roothuus) is a five hundred year old building that overlooks the Marktplatz in Basel, Switzerland. The City Council hosts the meetings of the Cantonal Parliament and the Cantonal Government of the canton of Basel-City. The House of Parliament had a set of frescoes painted in 1522 by Hans Holbein the Younger, but most have been lost.1 2 Part of his work and some sketches are preserved in the Art Museum.3 "Rathaus" literally means "town hall", while the term "Roothus" means in the German Basel dialect "town hall" but it also sounds the same as "red house", a play on words referring to the building's red sandstone facade .

BASEL: SWIMMING IN THE RHINE On hot summer days, swimming in the Rhine allows you to cool off and enjoy: bathers - who must be good swimmers - jump into the water between the Wettsteinbrücke and Johanniterbrücke bridges and let themselves be carried by the downstream current. Follow the example of the inhabitants of Basel and have a very special experience. To avoid getting wet, you can store your clothes in a "Wickelfisch", an original Basel invention consisting of a brightly colored floating fish-shaped bath bag. Tip: When you get out of the water, have a drink at one of the kiosks or Buvetten on the sunny shore of Kleinbasel.
