Estos son algunos de nuestros lugares favoritos para conectarnos con la naturaleza, ¡estas son las razones principales por las que amamos tanto Puerto Morelos!
Below the limestone shelf of all Riviera Maya, underground rivers flow throughout the region. Cenotes are sinkholes through the limestone, leading to flooded caves and beautifully blue freshwater pools. They are absolutely magical! Ancient Mayas believed the rain god Chaak resided in caves and cenotes, so it was a sacred place that connected with the Maya Otherworld.
And in Puerto Morelos we have a strip where cenotes dot the jungle on either side of the road for several kilometers. So there are many options to choose from.
Tips:
- The cenotes are not always easy to access on foot, some walking will be required, stairs or ladders. Or if you are adventurous enough some of them have zip lines or you can just jump to enter!
- Mosquitos love the jungle! So pack some repelent.
- Many cenote parks allow you to bring your own food and drinks, check before if alcohol is also allowed.
- Bring a change of clothes and a towel.
- There are no bilboards on this road, so make a note of the kilometer markings to more easily find your desired cenote.

Debajo de la plataforma de piedra caliza de toda la Riviera Maya, fluyen ríos subterráneos en toda la región. Los cenotes son sumideros a través de la piedra caliza, que conducen a cuevas inundadas y piscinas de agua dulce bellamente azules. ¡Son absolutamente mágicos! Los antiguos mayas creían que el dios de la lluvia Chaak residía en cuevas y cenotes, por lo que era un lugar sagrado que conectaba con el Otro Mundo Maya.
Y en Puerto Morelos tenemos una franja donde los cenotes aparecen en la selva a ambos lados de la carretera durante varios kilómetros. Por lo tanto, hay muchas opciones para elegir.
Consejos:

This is one of our favorites! And is just 20 minutes away from the house!, located at km17 of the ruta de los cenotes, it is an open cenote, meaning is like a huge swimming pool of fresh water, there is a zipline and you can also jump from 5 or 7 meters high.
There a couple of spider monkeys around, if you are lucky enough you will see them, although they might want to steal some of your food =)

Cenote Verde Lucero
This is one of our favorites! And is just 20 minutes away from the house!, located at km17 of the ruta de los cenotes, it is an open cenote, meaning is like a huge swimming pool of fresh water, there is a zipline and you can also jump from 5 or 7 meters high.
There a couple of spider monkeys around, if you are lucky enough you will see them, although they might want to steal some of your food =)

Two cenotes at this location, in one you can jump from a 14meters platform to an open cenote or enjoy swimming on a cave cenote which also has a smaller platform to jump from or a wrecking ball if you are strong enough.
You can also ride a powerfull atv honda trx250 or relax in the hammocks.

Hay dos cenotes en este lugar, en uno puedes saltar de una plataforma de 14 metros a un cenote abierto y en el otro disfrutar de nadar en un cenote de cueva que también tiene una plataforma más pequeña para saltar o una bola de demolición si eres lo suficientemente fuerte para subir.
También puedes montar en un potente atv honda trx250 o relajarte en las hamacas.

Only 30 min away from the house. Located at Km 19 of the "Ruta de los Cenotes"

Founded in 1982 in order to protect the regional flora and conserve the biodiversity of northern Quintana Roo, it is currently the only reservoir of original vegetation that remains in this area and in which there are two of the most important ecosystems in the region, subperennifolia and mangrove medium forest.
This living museum of 65 hectares, located in Puerto Morelos, is one of the largest botanical gardens in the Mexican Republic and the most important in the region. In it there are several collections of plants in the region, from medicinal to ornamental, as well as various wildlife species that are preserved in their ancestral ecosystem and, in turn, coexist with a faithful ethnographic representation of the Mayan civilization.

One of the main attraction to visitors of Coba is the Ancient Pyramid which unlike Chichen Itza's Kukulkan Pyramid, is still open for the public to climb its 130 steps up to the top of the site.
Cobá was finally opened to the public as an archeological site in1973. Archeologists have estimated that 6,000 structures exist, but only three settlements are for public viewing. what makes this site different from Chichen Itza, Ek Balam, or even Tulum is that Coba is not a single site but a large group of sites connected to the central pyramid, connected by over 16 Mayan ceremonial “white roads” (sacbéob). The three main areas that can be viewed in the Coba Ruins are the Nohoch Mul structures (main pyramid), Conjunto Pinturas (spiritual area) and Macanxoc structures (close to the lagoon that bears the same name). Your day at Coba can last up to 2.5 hours if you walk the site, 1.5 hours if you take advantage of the Coba bicycle rentals or in an hour if you opt for the Mayan limo, a chauffeured tricycle where you just sit and take in the sights. Both bicycle options are inexpensive and super fun!
There are also three hotels, one campsite and seven restaurants scattered throughout the site and there is a small pueblo near the ruins, with some restaurants and small shops selling local crafts.

Tulum archaeological site is one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites. Located 95km away from the house, you can be there in about 1hr 15min.
The Tulum ruins are the third most-visited archaeological site in Mexico, after Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza.
As well as being the only Mayan city built on a coast, Tulum was one of the few protected by a wall. It was a seaport, trading mainly in turquoise and jade.
Made of limestone, the 784-metre wall encloses the site on three sides, is seven metres thick, and varies between three and five metres in height.
Just north of the Castillo is a pathway that leads down to a sandy beach and the multi-hued Caribbean. For visual drama, a walk along the beach provides ample opportunity for photographs. The walk is an adventure into, around and under nooks and crannies carved out of the cliffs. Each additional turn brings a new, secluded stretch of the Caribbean, perfect for both swimming and reflecting on the ruins.

El sitio arqueológico de Tulum es uno de los sitios mayas costeros mejor conservados. Ubicado a 95 km de la casa, puedes estar allí en aproximadamente 1 hora y 15 minutos.
Las ruinas de Tulum son el tercer sitio arqueológico más visitado de México, después de Teotihuacan y Chichén Itzá.
Además de ser la única ciudad maya construida en una costa, Tulum fue una de las pocas protegidas por un muro. Era un puerto marítimo, que comerciaba principalmente con turquesa y jade.
Hecho de piedra caliza, el muro de 784 metros encierra el sitio en tres lados, tiene siete metros de espesor y varía entre tres y cinco metros de altura.
Justo al norte del Castillo hay un camino que conduce a una playa de arena y al Caribe multicolor. Un paseo por la playa ofrece muchas oportunidades para tomar fotografías. La caminata es una aventura con los rincones y grietas excavadas en los acantilados.

Drinking Water & Ice
All the restaurants in town use purified drinking water and ice. They use this water to prepare your coffee, tea or soups.
Wash the veggies in purified water or tap water and add a disinfectant they sell in any market exclusively for this use. There is no reason to worry.
Bottled water is inexpensive and available everywhere. You can brush your teeth with the tap water, just don't drink it. If you open your mouth in the shower you will not die. You are far more likely to get sick from too much sun or tequila than the water, salad or ice.

High heels in Puerto Morelos? Uh…no. We’re a very casual town. Shirts and shoes or sandals in restaurants of course and proper attire is expected if you are entering the church, but you won’t need your jacket and tie here.

Pharmacies – We have a ton of them now! On the port side alone we have Chedraui, the Farmacia on the square (west side), and Farmacia de Similares (beside Budget just south of the OXXO on Ninos Heroes.) There are several more options at the highway (Chedraui, YZA, Paris, Express) and in the Colonia.

Weather
This will be the least of your worries. Days tend to be hot & sunny. If we do get rain, it will likely come down with attitude and then move on. Evenings in December and January can be “coolish”, you may wish to carry a light jacket. Beware of regular weather sites, they often show us with rain when there is none. WindGuru is the only site we believe.

Tipping
Wages are low in Mexico, so your tips do make a big difference. Standard is about 10-15% at restaurants. You may encounter more tipping opportunities. The person who bags your groceries for example is a volunteer and only gets paid in tips. Also anyone offering to help you with your bags or helping you back your car out of your space. We tip the Pemex guys if they clean the windshield.
