One of the main attractions at Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve is Laguna Grande, one of the three bio-bays in Puerto Rico. The narrow and long canal that leads to the dazzling, glow-in-the-dark waters make this a lagoon, technically, rather than a bay. You can kayak or cruise in a small boat and experience a surreal moment when the agitation of the water makes it light up thanks to microscopic organisms in the water. Although visitors are not allowed to swim in the lagoon, you can agitate the water with your hands and witness a magical natural spectacle. Be sure to book in advance and take into consideration that the less moonlight there is, the better the experience of this natural phenomenon will be.

DescriptionEl Yunque National Forest is a tropical rainforest in northeastern Puerto Rico. From El Portal Visitor Center, a walkway winds through the surrounding treetops. Trails run to La Mina waterfall and Mount Britton, then up to the high-altitude dwarf forest. In the south are ancient petroglyphs, made by the area’s indigenous Taíno people. The forest comes alive with the nightly calls of coquí tree frogs. I strongly recommend that when you a visit the Yunque Rainforest, use a rental car as transportation. An Uber will only leave you at the entrance of the forest and will not drive you inside.

At the south end of the parking lot, we noticed a path that leads into the mangrove forest — of course we had to check it out. It was not long trail, but would not be fun to try carrying all your beach gear. Mosquito repellent would have been a good idea, but we were not prepared. After a while, we came to a sign indicating that we had entered Playa Medio Mundo, which is one of the properties managed by El Fideicomiso de Conservación de Puerto Rico (the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico). Playa Medio Mundo means "Half World Beach" in English, most likely named for the shape of the cove. It’s another very long, though narrow (maybe 10 feet wide), white sand beach. We took a long walk on this beautiful, deserted beach, just admiring the sand and blue water. There are no facilities of any kind at this beach.

Located just 16 miles off mainland Puerto Rico, Culebra feels as if it's a world away. With no hotels, fast-food chains, or traffic, this sleepy Caribbean island is best known for its slow pace. Here, solace seekers relax on powder-soft beaches, surrounded by nothing by sky and sea. If lounging all day doesn’t sound like your thing, head to Flamenco—one of the most popular beaches—to check out the coral reef, which comes right up to the shore.

Mosquito Bay is the best place in the world to see one of nature’s most fascinating spectacles: bioluminescence. Located on the isle of Vieques, off the eastern coast of the main island, this sheltered inlet is home to a special kind of plankton, called dinoflagellates, which emit a blue-green light when agitated. On their own, they’re barely perceptible. But here in Bio Bay, as it’s also known, there are enough to hold the Guinness World Record for the brightest bioluminescence ever recorded. That’s incredibly rare. While the phenomenon occurs spontaneously around the globe, there are only six places on the planet where it does so regularly. Of those, Mosquito Bay is by far the brightest. Come and see waves shimmer like disco lights or sparks trail from your fingers like the tail of a comet. At night, when its easiest to see, it’s like floating in liquid stars. See it: A kayak tours is the best way to experience Mosquito Bay (some have see-through bottoms). Time your visit with a new moon. biequecotrips.com

Playa Los Machos means "Men’s Beach" in English. It’s a very long, and wide (maybe 30 or 40 feet wide), white sand beach. There is a huge (free) parking lot, and also some picnic pavilions that you can use, with BBQ grills, but no tables or chairs. There are no other facilities. It was a very "natural beach" — meaning it had seaweed and sea grass in places. I hear it can have a lot of seaweed at certain times of year, due to weather and seasonal conditions. It was a beautiful, large, cove-shape that looked wonderfully inviting … but be careful! There are no life guards and it has been noted that there can be hazardous water conditions at Playa Los Machos, so swimming there is not recommended. We walked to the far south end of the beach, where the mangroves start, where we found another little cove. But, unfortunately, there was a lot of trash there that had either washed up, or was left behind by other people using the area.

Snorkeling in Fajardo

The Cordillera Natural Reserve is made up of remote keys and cays that are full of bright and abundant ocean life. Places like Palomino Island, a location owned by El Conquistador hotel, gives you the opportunity to dive in the waters, play some beach volleyball, practice paddle boarding, and even snorkel around the reefs. Other nearby cays are Cayo Lobos, Cayo Ratones, Cayo Diablo, and Cayo Cucarachas. Charter a catamaran to go beach and cay-hopping with some friends.
