Frog Hill is the nickname for this abandoned tin mining site. A hidden gem that’s surprisingly close to Penang. Its existence is only starting to become known among locals through word of mouth. Those Instagram photos probably help drive up its growing popularity too. Actually, this place has a few names: Lombong Kampung Guar Petai, Froghill Tasek Gelugor or Guar Perahu. Some people have even claimed that it resembles Jiuzhaigou in China. It is located in North Seberang Perai which is on the mainland rather than the island of Penang. We made this trip from Ipoh one weekend since we happened to have a wedding to attend in nearby Bukit Mertajam too. Did I mention? There is NO entrance fee. With that, you can’t expect any proper facilities either. Make sure you prepare accordingly.

A popular place for bird watching but nothing else. A small pocket of swampy land by a river, the bird life is relatively rich especially during migratory seasons (SEP to April). It's a relax place to drop by. Many monkeys here and there titi gantung you can experience. Need to be careful due to some unrepaired gap of the footstep. There are also gazebos and benches to rest yourself.

The mural scene at Seberang Perai may have blossomed later but is quickly catching up with George Town’s iconic street art. The Butterworth Art Walk is a product of Penang’s vibrant artists and the state’s rich history. With its eye-catching murals and installations, it aims to educate visitors about the mainland’s colourful past. Seberang Perai’s agricultural economy and history in exporting elephants are amongst the interesting facts that one can learn walking along the small alley in Jalan Bagan Luar. Who knew history could serve as a quirky backdrop for a photo op.

Penang Bird Park is the first and largest bird park in Malaysia. Established in 1988, the RM1.2 million complex is home to over 300 species of birds (150 of which are of local origin) ranging from kingfishers and tiny exotic sunbirds to vulturine guineafowl and huge, gigantic eight ft-tall ostriches. Located in Seberang Jaya, within the beautifully- landscaped, five-acre Penang Bird Park are two walk-in aviaries and two geodesic-domed enclosures, resembling the birds’ natural habitat. This allows for free roaming pelicans, flamingos, swans, storks mandarin ducks and other kinds of birds.

The ancient village with forgotten intrigues of the past today embodies the rural and natural charm of Bukit Mertajam. More than a century ago, there lived at the end of a rural path south of Bukit Mertajam town a highly respected elderly Siamese healer named Kun. Known for his medicinal and shamanistic abilities, Dato’ Kun or To’ Kun as he was called, was sought by many who made their way to his quiet alcove near a foothill for treatment of various ailments. In Malay, such a cul-de-sac at the end of a thoroughfare is called “cherok”. In modern times it is spelt “ceruk”, just as “dato’” which means grandfather is now commonly spelt “datuk”.  While the legendary soothsayer is largely forgotten today, the name of the area around which he lived has remained in his honour as Cherok To’ Kun. The spelling has been varied over the last few decades, with some signboards and other references putting it as Ceruk Tok Kun or Cherok Tokun.

The surprising and little-known urban coastal public park of Butterworth Penangites are very familiar with popular beachside recreational sites for the public in several urban areas on the island. They know of Gurney Drive, the Esplanade, Karpal Singh Drive and Queensbay. Few people, however, are aware of Pantai Robina on the mainland. Quite possibly this is one of the most relaxing and scenic urban coastal promenades in the state that few locals have visited. Ensconced along the far northern end of Butterworth, Pantai Robina is free from the glitzy commercialism that has inundated Gurney Drive and the noisy hordes that often afflict Karpal Singh Drive and Queensbay. Located behind the quiet Taman Wira and Taman Robina residential estates, across the landmark Butterworth air force base, Pantai Robina’s park-like setting is well hidden from the busy urban traffic and raucousness of the town.

Pantai Bersih (GPS: 5.44328, 100.37895) is a stretch of beach in Bagan Ajam, Butterworth. The name Pantai Bersih means "clean beach", and until recently, that's all there is to the name. It is a beach on the northern part of Butterworth. Geographically it is to the immediate north of Pantai Molek. The area is served by Jalan Pantai Bersih, which comprises two branches joined at a T-junction. In recent years, however, Pantai Bersih has become slightly cleaner than before. This comes about following the reclamation of the coastline for the Butterworth Outer Ring Road, which did away with the mudflats that gave Pantai Bersih a rather unpleasant odour during low tide. The coast of Pantai Bersih, while not the cleanest still, is certainly much improved to before. Palm trees have been replanted, especially near the expressway rest stop. Coastal fisherman are out on the coast doing their thing with nets. At the moment, swimming in the sea off Pantai Bersih doesn't look at all appealing yet. As compensation, one can simply stand by the coast and admire the view of Penang Island across the channel.

MBI DesaKu 自由游行 Kulim High Tech Park Kedah is a favorite brightly light night time garden attraction. The developer has cleverly conceptualized and converted the community open space to photography hot spot. Over the Chinese New Year break, we took a drive to DesaKu. When we went it was packed as the local from Kedah love to visit this magical fairyland night. It was unheard of a few years ago for a property developer to build a “theme” park to attract potential buyers. MBI has done well to create the trend of lighting up their properties in Dannok. The first transformation was a disused hillock behind an old temple into Penang Avatar Secret Garden. DesaKu is a mixed housing township project located Padang Meha, Kulim.

Curios, novelties and everyday items in one flea market Cosy, colourful and full of surprises, this is a truly unique  flea market. Hidden within the commercial complex of Taman Selat, some 600m north of the ferry terminal, Rope Walk reveals a fascinating spectrum of offerings, both mundane and exotic.   Scores of petty traders like silversmiths, cobblers, watch repairers and foot massage therapists ply patiently next to stalls teeming with a rich variety of wares – antiques, costume jewellery, jeans, perfumes, handicrafts, mobile phones, traditional medicines and supplements, and many other goods both imported and local. Though little known to the outside world, this flea market seems to be a secret haunt for many people from Butterworth and the surrounding villages and townships. Hundreds of folks patronise the shops here every weekend and during public holidays. Indeed, Rope Walk, which is managed by a cooperative, features many novelty products that are rare and unique, and available at few other places in Penang.
