About 3km north of Vai is the ancient Minoan site of Itanos, It may appear fairly desolate today, but this was an important site, especially in ancient times. A lot of people combiine their visit to Palm Beach of Vai to visit this significant site as well. A short drive north of Palm Beach Vai (2 km) you find the relatively isolated bays and beaches of Itanos . In fact, there are 3 beaches here: the first is the one at the end of the road, the second is reached walking to the north (the beach on the photo) and the third is also reached walking south behind the small fortress. The third one is also suitable to spend time under the shade of the palm-trees. As an extra bonus there is a Minoan city at the entrance of the main beach. Itanos was one of the most influential places in the east of Crete. It florished from early Minoan to early Byzantian times. There are traces of a basilic and of Greek walls, and a lot of fallen apart traces on the hill. The region is pretty secluded and untouched by tourism, making the beaches very peaceful and relaxing. The beach is surrounded by small hills with low vegetation and has crystalline waters, safe for children as well.

The gorge is located near the village Exo Mouliana, between Sitia and Ayios Nikolaos. You will need 3 - 3.5 hours to cross the gorge and on the way you will come across a stone bridge, a waterfall and several water mills. At the end of the route will arrive at the small rocky cove of Richtis where you can swim in the crystal clear waters or have a picnic under the shade of the trees.

Chiona beach is located 2 km east from Palekastro and 20 from Sitia. It is 300 m long and you can enjoy the rest under the shade of the tamarisks. The sandy sea bottom slopes gently, making swimming safe even for the youngest holidaymakers. On the southeastern side of the beach, there are many pristine and secluded, small bays, ideal for more privacy. The 3 traditional fish taverns are well-known on the whole Crete. People come here from every part of the island to taste the famous “kakavia” and “buyabesa” (traditional cretan meals with fish). The location around Chiona is covered with olive groves. Next to the beach there are other bays that offer more isolation. If you visit the area, you could visit the Minoan port in Roussolakos.

The beach is the longest in the area with a length exceeding 1.5km, bounded on the north by the Cape Tenta and on the south by the Cape Plaka. It has fine brown sand, shallow turquoise waters and several tamarisk trees around. It slightly organized in some areas with umbrellas, showers and beach bars. The beach is beautiful but the main feature of Kouremenos is elsewhere: the wind. Indeed, the wind here is so strong that the area is popular to windsurfers and kite surfers across Europe. Indeed it is no coincidence that the area hosts some of the largest wind turbine park in Greece, exploiting the huge wind potential.
