Specialty Food and Drink Shopping

Our place is close to a section of Kittery on Rte.1 known locally as "Gourmet Alley". It includes a butcher shop, greengrocer, bakery, fresh pasta shop, fish monger, and chocolate shop. Slightly off of Rte.1 you'll find another butcher shop and a fish store. We are in the heart of gastronomic heaven.
A place to purchase fresh pasta and variety of sauces, as well as pre-made meals, and fresh sandwiches. A great stop to put together a picnic. Also sells wine, olives, cheeses etc. Note: As of May 2023 the building is being renovated and the business may be on hiatus.

Nose to tail artisanal butcher shop. The meat is premium quality from local farms. If you want to make a burger for the grill, you can't do better than the aged grind. The shop also stocks deli meat, cheeses, beer, wine and other accoutrements. The owners, Rook and Shannon, are the best.

This Kittery fish store and casual restaurant on Gourmet Alley serves up really good, sustainably harvested (often line caught from their own fleet) seafood. What it doesn't have in terms of waterfront location it makes up for in the quality of the fish and its preparation. Sometimes when the fleet is in and the market is short staff the Captain will be behind the register.

A new building in an old town. The bottom floor is a bohemian food hall with a range of foods and drink. Comfortable couches, nooks, and tables are quickly making it a go to public space in Portsmouth. Good quality food and cocktails, though a bit pricey. Some retail stuff too. Worth a walk through. Nice restrooms is you need one while exploring downtown.

Casual Dining and Pubs

Best of the low key places to eat and drink. Its impossible to fully capture the dining scene in our area so these are among our favorites... for quality and convenience. There are too many local brew houses to feature here but you may wish to check out: Earth Eagle, Great Rhythm, Tributary, Loaded Question, Liar's Bench etc...

This place requires its own category. Perhaps, file under "Top Notch Craft Cocktails"? Yet there is only one Dram. This is a cozy, limited seating establishment that escapes notice, like a secret portal to another universe. Everything, besides what comes in a bottle, is handmade; the bitters, the garnishes, the mixers. The menu takes time to absorb...take your time...find your libation. Don't embarrass yourself by ordering "white wine" or a "beer"...I scoff when I hear that. This is a cocktail emporium. Have a cocktail or leave a seat open for someone who is serious. Limited bar menu and snacks. If you're on the wait list at Black Birch, they'll text you...its just across the parking lot. Its actually a fabulous one- two punch of an evening.

Its really daunting to name all of the craft, micro, and nano breweries in a 10 mile radius of Kittery. However, Throwback Brewery in North Hampton stands out. Chef Matt Louis, who trained with Thomas Keller at the French Laundry, is a community favorite. At Moxy he serves up small plates (tapas) with an America twist. This spot is #1 in our book and apparently people who will drive from Boston to eat here, agree. Go for snacks when they open at 3:30 (conveniently timed for end of shift at the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard) and stay for dinner. Otherwise, be prepared to wait because they don't take reservations. That said, owner Gavin or his top notch staff will offer you a drink and you can chat up the other aspirational diners until a table opens up. We like to sit at the bar and watch Al spin LPs. The Puddle Dock is located on the Strawbery Banke historic museum campus. Housed in a building that was constructed to portray a typical colonial-era New England country store for the 1964 World's Fair in New York. It has been carefully renovated for its new iteration as a restaurant. The fare is "modern colonial" meaning it will reflect food long served in New England taverns using mostly local ingredients. Each dish has a modern twist. We've dined her only once but it was a delicious meal served in a lovely environment. A walk across the street in Prescott Park before or after is recommended.

Lobster and Fish Shacks

You're in Maine. Unless you have a shellfish allergy (no laughing matter) you're probably going to want some lobster or fried seafood. This is a no-judgement zone.
Lobster in the rough. Picnic tables on the side of Chauncey Creek. Boiled lobsters, steamers, corn...the classic lobster boil. A few other dishes but quite basic. There are three places to recommend here. The first for lobster, fried seafood, and other casual fare in a fantastic outdoor setting is The Wharf at Pepperrell Cove. Its been open a year. Everyone loves it. Best place to eat a lobster roll and sip a rum punch while the sun sets. There is also Bistro 1828, indoors on the same premises. I don't really ever recommend people come to the coast of Maine and shop at the Kittery Outlets. But you do you. A newcomer to the dining and drink scene in Kittery. Located in a plum spot on Badger's Island (an easy walk from Suite19) this is a modern fish shack and bar. The food and drink are fine. Its not the best place for a lobster roll but its good. What recommends the place is proximity and the view by the Piscataqua. If you've walked in to explore Portsmouth, this is a nice way station on the way home. Pro tip, the stone house next door has a "chicken run" you may want to walk by on your way out. That is, if you have an affinity for watching chickens.

You may have heard about the historic Wentworth By the Sea Hotel, which in 1905 housed the Russian and Japanese delegations who concluded the Treaty of Portsmouth to end the Russo-Japanese War. After falling into disrepair this beautiful hotel is back in action. The service at Salt can be spotty but it does serve a spectacular breakfast. It serves other meals but I'm highlighting it for its breakfast. Nothing else like it really.

We don't have many doughnut places in our parts. This one opened recently. Vegan. Very good. I bring my own coffee though...need 1/2 and 1/2...oatmilk just doesn't cut it.

Again, if you are a TJ's devotee then its just a short drive away. You may suddenly need some speculoos cookie butter, we don't judge. Also, if you are more Aldi than Joe...you'll find one of those at the other end of the same plaza.
