The Best of Sag Harbor - EATERIES

While many places that offer lobster rolls and fresh seafood have gone way up in price, the Dock House remains reasonable, and is one of the most beautiful locations to sit and eat. If they're busy, they will give you a clam shell with a number on it and you can stroll the wharf and look at the picturesque bridge, Windmill beach and fancy yachts that are often parked there.

I am not a fan of their coffee, but everything else here is delicious. Especially the buttery lobster rolls! This is a local favorite and only a few minutes from the house.

Estia's is amazing. Fresh food they mostly get from their own garden, or source locally. Breakfast is the best around. Even waiting for a table is not that bad as the gardens are gorgeous - but they do have limited tables so best to go early.

Sitting outside at Dockside Bar & Grill is always a treat. I like just about everything on their menu. During the cold Winter months, their chicken pot pie is to die for. Billy Joel's boathouse is across the street with all its colorful buoys.

The Best of Sag Harbor - COFFEE

From age 8, my daughter has called Sagtown her "Happy Place." (Some things are best not explained to kids...). It does seem to have that Je ne sais quoi... a spot where people like to hang out and lollygag with coffee or Acai bowls in the morning. Maybe you too will call it your Happy Place. :-)

The last donut I had there had jelly made with Rose from Wolffer's vineyard. It was divine. My other favorite is the Lemon Poppy donut. After the weekend, they sometimes put out day-old donuts for only $1.00 and you know, those are awesome too.

The coffee shop in the back of Sylvester's is a little known secret. It's my favorite place for ICED coffee (serve yourself)... It really is "dreamy" as they say. They also have hot coffee and you can take it outside and sit on a bench and people-watch, but I always end up browsing around the store as I guess is the point of having coffee in the back! ...Great store to browse around.

Where can you go to a 7-Eleven that is backed up by a view like this one? I dunno! This 7-Eleven also has a wide array of help yourself coffees and I believe this 7-Eleven has items they don't carry in just any ole 7-Eleven. Whatever it is you need, late at night -- (or ahem after 7pm when most grocers are closed), this one should have it. At busy times it may be best not to drive into that itsy bitsy parking lot. Just park on the street across from the post office.

As Cheap As it Gets (in the Hamptons!)

Sag Harbor USED TO be the place to go for the "unHamptons" or "cheaper" -- but of course escalating rents have hit Sag Harbor as well, and lately the 'ole standbys like Bay Burger, Conco D'Oro's pizza and other local favorites are gone. But a few places remain reasonably priced and have stood the test of time. You can help to keep them in business. : )
Real NY style bagels used to be hard to find out here. Now they are easy, at Bagel Buoy. People mispronounce it as "Bagel Boy" but it is Bagel Buoy, ("Booey") you know, the things floating out there so boats know where to anchor? Marina park across the street is a nice, quiet place to sit and eat or have coffee. Please don't let kids chase the ducks! They have enough problems already. Quack!

Some say Schiavoni's is expensive, but it is the only grocery store we have in town and compared to other Hamptons towns, I would say it is reasonable. This thrift store is in a class of its own. Donations come from well-heeled Hamptonites who are passionate about the cause, as sales go to The Retreat safe haven for victims of domestic violence. The Retreat is the only thing like it and has many helpful programs for local, (or so called "year-round") Hamptons families. I have found so many items at the Boutique which have been a smash hit, it would be too long a list. Last time we were there, we got a designer gown for $10 for my daughter's dance. Yes $10. Her dress was 20x cheaper than her hair. The Retreat Boutique is open only until 6pm and is in BridgeHampton Commons across from TJMaxx. If you like thrift shops, you gotta go to this one!

Every Hamptonite knows about L.V.I.S. (pronounced "Elvis") in East Hampton which stands for Ladies Village Improvement Society. This thrift shop is nestled into the back of a beautiful historic site beside the tennis courts in Herrick park in East Hampton. You can walk to it easily from the compact car park of Herrick parking lot. LVIS dates back to 1895 when "ladies who lunch" (then in long dresses) got together and beautified the village. They now not only take care of various gardens and trees in East Hampton but they offer scholarships and programs to the local students. There is clothing thrift store which in my opinion is more hit than miss as clothes can be dropped off by wealthy Hamptonites who perhaps have only worn the item once! Donations are sorted out on the racks by color so it's easy to find what you want. There is also a "Labels for Less" rack for the more designer threads. They have furniture and bric-a-brac for sale in the "Bargain Box" a separate shop ... and it's nice to browse the many books in the back too. (Children's section is nice). Every LAST SATURDAY of July, LVIS holds a festival fundraiser with a carousel, food and is fun for families.

I am not one for clothes shopping, but I love this store. If you forgot to pack something or need something in a hurry, this place always seems to have what you need -- like that perfect underthing for your sundress... or a light sweater...I love their soaps in the back too, and the price can't be beat. Beaches!!

Sag Harbor Village is divided, (by Division Street), into East Hampton and Southampton. Southampton beaches (actually in Sagaponack) are closest. Ocean Road Beach and Sagg Road beach are about a 15-minute drive. Here, I will also suggest places to stop for a bite to eat near each beach.
Havens Beach (my guidebook photo) is about 7 minutes walk from the house. Hampton Street can be busy and is best to cross at the crosswalk. Havens is a small quiet bay beach. There are bathrooms and a little loop drive where people who like to jog like to jog.

This is the most beautiful bay beach in my opinion, and the best if you want to take a long swim. Locals call it "Long Beach." You can always get parking (but as with all beaches, there is a day fee if you don't have a residential permit). You will always have a stretch of beach all to yourselves no matter how busy the Hamptons. There are bathrooms but no snack bar. The choices for food are slim near Long beach so it's best to take food and drinks with you. But if you wanna venture off for a snack or some cold drinks, Serene Greene's farm stand is closest, at the end of Long Beach where it connects to Noyac Road. If you want to go a little further, go toward Cromer's (which is a basic grocery store) on Noyac road. A little beyond Cromer's is a deli called Jimmy Jim's which is also good for a quick snack -- and a little further still is a little restaurant called Cappeletti's that serves lobster rolls and I hear the italian food is good there.

If you're at Indian Wells or Atlantic beach -- or simply driving through Amagansett on way to Montauk, it's really great to stop in at Meetinghouse Square in Amagansett and have a dosa at Hampton Chutney. When you are there, you can see why it is a favorite spot for celebrities. It's beautiful. These are the same owners as the chutney in Manhattan, but quite a different environs here. Children like to play on the grassy knoll with the tall trees and play hide and seek behind the hydrangeas that seem to be everywhere. My fav dish at Chutney is the mango Lhassi (Paul McCartney likes the strawberry lhassi), and the breakfast dosa with cilantro chutney.
