The VMFA is a respectable museum for a mid sized city such as Richmond :)
In addition to national touring exhibits the museum has a great showing of American art from colonial through the modern ages, and European, Egyptian and Asian collections as well as the largest permanent Faberge collection out side of Russia. The Best Cafe hosts great music events and The Amuse restaurant is excellent (reservations suggested for Amuse)

The ICA is new addition to Richmond. Check the website because the exhibitions are always changing. Admission is free but it's in an area where parking can be challenging. I suggest Uber, or the Pulse bus, or be sure to mind the parking meter. The ICA is in the Gallery District Downtown. If you go it may be fun to plan an evening of gallery hopping and drinks and dining. The 1st Friday of every month many galleries host opening parties.

This is an amazing Tudor mansion that was brought over from England and reassembled in the West End not far from the Guest House. The guided tours are very educational and the grounds are lovely.

17 screens are showing all the new releases 3 miles away in this modern cinema that was one a locomotive assembly plant. There's plenty of free parking at the cinema or 20 bus can take you from the bus stop 2 blocks away @ Freeman and Maplewood right to the front of the theater on Arthur Ashe Boulevard. The last bus returning you home is usually around 10:45 so bus transport is only a good option for early movies.

This fun arcade is a great stop to make when spending time in the Scott's Addition neighborhood. They have a great selection of new and classic games, an excellent beer selection and surprisingly good food for an arcade.

This restaurant frequently make Richmond's top restaurant lists for good reason. So much delicious-ness is made in house. The Italian inspired menu features sandwiches and small plates, as well as dinners and deserts and terrific espresso beers or wine.

My personal favorite upscale Chinese food ever is in the Scott's Addition neighborhood. Warning when they say spicy, they really mean it. If you enjoy public transportation the city 20 bus can take you right from the corner of Freeman & Maplewood to the front of Peter Chang. The restaurant shares the historic Hof Building with the Hof Rooftop beer garden. I suggest getting drinks and exploring Scott's Addition.

There's so much outside activity to enjoy in Richmond, especially along the river. Here are some suggestions ranging from mild to wild.
This is a nice, new, spacious inclusive playground that's suitable for all ages and ability levels. They have ample covered seating / picnic areas.

Belle Isle is easily accessible by a foot bridge and has many walking biking trails and historic markers. The surrounding rapids are scenic but are considered advanced so use caution by the water.

Richmond is well known for having one of the most accessible yet advanced urban river and rapids in the United States. If you love this kind of adventure then Riverside Outfitters is one of the best places around to help you arrange a rafting, tubing paddle boarding or climbing trip.
