Restaurants

These are some great places in Steamboat that we frequent ourselves. The list includes mostly healthy places, but also some more indulgent locations.
We eat here 2-3 times a week. The food and flavors are excellent and the drinks are just as good. Very healthy approach with a very kind staff and great atmosphere.

The owner of Seedz is also the owner of Rootz. This is an amazing, walk-up/dine-in lunch and dinner spot right in the middle of downtown. They have incredible shakes and an amazing array of really great food to choose from. This is hands down our favorite spot in Steamboat.

Our family's go-to holiday restaurant. My son, Matt worked there for a few years in his teens and my photos are featured around the restaurant. We love this space — amazing food, incredible salad bar and all around solid restaurant for 2 people, all the way up to 60.

Great go-to spot for breakfast and lunch (or brunch, of course). Very much a healthy diner-style food with a focus on natural and organic ingredients. We love this place.

What's better than breakfast beside a babbling brook? That's what you'll get at Creekside, which is located downtown right next to Soda Creek. It will obviously only babble in the summer, but this spot is a must-hit if you love breakfasts done right.

You ever had a cinnamon bun so big and delicious that you went temporarily blind from it? We haven't either, but if you are able to finish one of their famous massive pastries in one sitting, you'll swear you might need to at least shut your eyes for a while and revel in the flavor of heaven covered in 3 lbs of icing. The breakfast is good here too.

The Double Z specializes in meat on meat with a side of meat. They have salads too, but let's be honest, the only salad you'll be eating at the Double Z is a basket of home-cut french fries. Dare we say that this place has the best burgers and BBQ in town? We dare do.

Hands down the best sandwiches in Steamboat. Great ingredients, friendly humans. Perfect place to grab a sandwich before hiking, biking, fishing, walking, skiing, dancing, drinking, tubing, sleeping, calling friends, showering, hot springing, eating, etc...

Mambo's literally has a man who sings to, at, and around you Italian classics all night long. But you shouldn't just go for his voice. You like-a Italian foodsah? Then you have to make the trip down to visit to throw the best pasta and pizza in your pie hole.

Aprés ski often translates to tall can PBRs and garbage bag french fries in America. This place has a different interpretation (except for the tall boys; those they still have). The food here is exceptional and the atmosphere is a lot like heaven, if heaven was the feeling that an 80s ski movie gives you. Seriously though, you must stop here and enjoy a meal. We promise you will not leave empty tummied or disappointed. WE PROMISE.

If you're from the east coast, try not to get upset when you find out that we can still make a damn good hoagie in the west. This shop has some of the best subs around. Super friendly staff, and lots of great options for all the 'vores (omni, carni, vege...tarianivore? Is this joke even funny?). Honestly though, if you're planning on burning calories, at any point in the day, Cruisers is a great place to (p)refill yer tank.

Outdoor Gear & Rentals

The best places to rent skis and snowboards in Steamboat (in our opinion)
Ski Haus has been in Steamboat for 30+ years and has everything you will ever need for rentals and equipment. They have a full shop upstairs if you need any winter/outdoor gear and a full rental shop downstairs with equipment for any sport. They are incredibly friendly and reasonable!

The owner Peter is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful in all things outdoor gear. We've been hangin' at Backdoor for over 15 years. He has great outdoor gear for the winter and the summer, but is our go to for tube rentals for floating down the Yampa River in the summers. If you go in, tell Peter that Matt, Jack, and Cyndi say hi!

Great Coffee Shops

Places we love to go to get caffeinated.
Owned by an ex-New Yorker, this place brews the coffee that they roast themselves. Great atmosphere, and a huge open space make this place our favorite shop in town for getting quality coffee. Plus the logo has a skull in it. So Gnar.

Things to do

There are so many incredible things to do in Steamboat. These are some of our favorites.
If you have time to get up to the Strawberry Hot Springs, this is a must see/must soak. Fully natural hot springs built into the side of the mountain, bring your friends and enjoy a night (or day) resting the bones in some boiling ground water. We highly recommend driving up in a 4 wheel drive vehicle only as the roads get rather treacherous in the winter. There are also shuttle services available. Head to their website to inquire about getting a lift.

Though a small piece of the left ear crumbled off last year, that doesn't mean a trip up to the pass isn't worth it. A great hike in both the summer and the winter, this is a nice way to spend a day off the mountain and out of town getting deep into nature. You can easily skin around if you have an A/T setup, or bring your snowshoes to make sure you can do the full exploration.

This is likely obvious! Year round, the mountain offers great concerts and events. The winter offers some of the best skiing in the country and the summers come with climbing walls, hiking, biking, and all of the good things that come with being outdoors. Even if you aren't a hardcore skier, or hiker you should definitely take a ride up the gondola to catch some of the best views in Steamboat.
