Beaches

Costa Rica is known for its beaches and we have many in the area to explore
Walking distance from La Casa Roja you’ll find 4.5 km of beach. Great for sailing, fishing, swimming, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding. Much quieter than nearby Flamingo. Bahia del Sol and the Costa Rica Sailing Center both offer restaurants and beach club services. Bring a magnet (or drop your phone and look at its speaker like I did) for science fun with the kids!

Lovely white sand beach with some wave action. Some trees for shade but they fill up quickly so either bring an umbrella or rent a beach tent from one of the local vendors. Delicious food available at Coco Loco Restaurant at the quieter south end of the beach. Lots of restaurants walking distance from the north end of the beach.

Secluded white sand beach in a cove setting at the north end of Potrero. Good snorkelling. Can be busy on holiday weekends but otherwise very quiet. You can walk to Playa Prieta via a path at the north end of the beach. Nearest restaurants are 350m up from where the road to Penca hits the beach. Both Carpe Diem Café and Sol y Mar Soda are great.

Conchal means shell, which is what this pinkish white beach is made from. Even the howler monkeys know this is the place to hang out. They’re usually sleeping in the trees by the path behind the beach. Great for swimming and snorkelling. You may even see stingrays. You used to be able to cross the river at Brasilito Beach and drive here but no longer. So to get here you must either park at Playa Brasilito town parking area and walk south, or take highway 933 to Matapalo and get on the gravel road to Peurto Viejo at the other end of Conchal.

North of Potrero town up the hill towards Las Catalinas are Playas Danta and Dantita. There is parking, a couple of restaurants and water activity rentals available here. Danta is a calm beach, good for swimming and boogie boarding. The southern end is sheltered and good for snorkelling. If you want more seclusion and are up for a bit of a hike, head over the hill to Playa Dantita. It’s about 500m over uneven terrain, so it’s not recommended for anyone with mobility issues. However, if you’re up for some sweat, you’ll get some nice views and maybe see some wildlife on the way. You can also reach Dantita at low tide by walking around the northern headland, but you’ll want some good non-slip waterproof footwear and to keep an eye on the time to make sure you don’t get stuck when the tide comes back in. If you do, your only option will be to go up and over the hill.

You’ll never lack for things to do in the area. From adrenaline pumping zip lines to relaxing boat rides to hiking through forests, there's lots to do. Our property managers can help you with recommendations, connecting you with reputable and reliable tours, at no extra charge. Or of course, you can always find and book your own adventures. We are here to help.
Zip lines, ATV tours, horseback riding, an animal sanctuary, a great buffet, a beach with kayaks, paddle boards and more, this place has it all. Lots of fun for the whole family. The staff is enthusiastic and knowledgable. Easily spend an entire day here and you won't run out of things to do. There are even buses to take you to all the different areas. And did we mention, sloths?

The Congo Trail offers much of the same adventures as Diamante: animals, ATVs, zip lines. We haven’t tried them yet, but their packages are a bit cheaper. I have a feeling their ATV tours might be more interesting as they have better access to forest. There is also a waterfall near them that I think they do ATV rides to. But double check as that may be seasonal.

If you’re looking for trails there is a system of over 40 kilometers of hiking and biking trails north of Potrero, just past Las Catalinas. The park began creating trails in 2010 and continues to improve and expand each year. There are challenges here for all levels of hikers and bikers, along with some great ocean views. For those wanting to hit the trails, Special Places can hook you up with everything you need from bikes to trail maps. You can also get to a deserted beach called Playa Zapotal. (You can get to this beach by road but I don’t recommend trying unless you’ve got a 4-wheel drive.) You have to wade thru the river mouth to get to the beach. Around the headland to the south is Playa Celeste, a gorgeous little beach. You can walk along the rocks at low tide from Zapotal, but keep an eye on the tide so you don’t get stuck. You can also get to this beach by boat.

Monkeys and crocodiles and birds, oh my! I highly recommend a boat ride at Palo Alto. Special Places booked our tour departing from Hacienda El Viejo and we had a great time. It’s about an hour away and it’s worth the drive. We saw loads of crocodiles, white faced monkeys, iguanas and lots and lots of birds. And the coffee and fresh fruit they offer at the hacienda are delicious! The staff and guides are excellent and well-informed.

Ocean Activities

Some just want to relax at the beach: sand, sun and swim. But for those wanting a bit more adventure, you are spoiled for choice: kayaking, sailing, fishing, scuba diving, snorkelling, stand up paddle boarding, boat rides, jet skis. We've listed a few options below but there are many more businesses in the area that cater to all your water activity needs.
Conveniently located just a few hundred meters from the house, the CR Sailing Center rents sail boats, SUPs, kayaks, etc and offers boat and snorkelling tours. There is also a full service dive shop on the premises. If you just want to hang at the beach, the centre has a full service restaurant and a swimming pool. They offer access to the pool, beach chairs and umbrellas if you order food from the restaurant. And every Wednesday at 6:00pm they hold trivia contest.

Day Trips

When you're ready to venture a little farther away than an hour or two, it's going to be hard to choose where to go. But here are a few options that we can recommend that all can be done in a day. It may end up being a pretty long day, but well worth it.
At this 34,000 acre national park with two volcanoes, dozens of rivers, waterfalls, hot springs, countless different flora and diverse fauna, you might see monkeys, sloths, tapir, maybe even a jaguar or puma. If you’re a bird watcher don’t forget your binoculars and checklist. You can hike, swim, soak in the hot springs, horseback ride and picnic. We spent a few days here on our first visit to the park but, as Rincón is less than 2 hours from La Casa Roja, it’s possible to do it as a day trip. However this is one of the best parks in Costa Rica, so if you have the time it is definitely worth spending a couple of days in the area. Lodges outside the park offer the adventure trips, like canopy tours, zip lining and tubing. Special Places can recommend the best tour operators who will cater to exactly what you want to do while you’re there.

A waterfall we like is Llano de Cortes, just south of Liberia. Go mid-week to avoid crowds. I wouldn’t necessarily do a special trip unless you plan to spend most of the day here swimming and having a picnic. It’s a refreshing break from the beach. Or if you’re in the area, stop in for a couple hours to cool off under the falls. There’s a large area at the base of the waterfall to swim in, as well as a shallow area for the kids, and lots of space on the banks to sit and picnic. I recommend water shoes if you have them; the bottom is a bit gravelly. Bring sunscreen, water and food as there are no services. There are washrooms available for those who enter via the official municipal entrance.

I recently learned about this waterfall/river tour and it sounds pretty awesome. It’s an adventurous rugged hike through forest and canyons, wading in river pools and climbing in caves, all along a beautiful blue river to reach the hidden waterfall. Reviews I’ve seen from visitors all seem very positive. The waterfall is on private land near Liberia and the owners offer guided tours.

Many feel Rio Celeste at Tenorio Volcano National Park is really special. After visiting it, a guest wrote to us “words cannot describe how amazing that place was”. She and her family did this as a day trip, but with a 2+ hour drive each way and a 3.7 mile hike once you’re there, this makes for a long day. There are stairs and the hike back up from the waterfall could be hard for small children and the mobility challenged. During high season it can get crowded, so a mid-week visit is a better bet. Or, you could take a few days and work this into a trip to visit Caño Negro, Arenal/Fortuna, Miravalles or the Cloud Forest -- all of which I can highly recommend.

Depending on the weather and the time of year, Guanacaste offers trips on Class 1 to Class IV rivers. So whether you want plunging, twisting, turning rapids or just a gentle float downriver, there is a rafting trip for you. Whichever you choose, you’ll get to enjoy beautiful scenery and wildlife from the vantage point of a gorgeous refreshing river. Most trips include drinks, snacks and lunch before or afterwards. Look for tours on the Colorado, Corbici and Tenorio Rivers as all of these are feasible as a day trip.

About an hour and a half away, near Cañas, there is a shelter that rescues, rehabilitates and releases animals. They specialize in wild cats. However not all animals are able to be released in the wild so Las Pumas also provides a safe and humane home for those that cannot. They currently are home to five of the six species of wild cats native to Costa Rica, as well as other permanent residents like monkeys, otter, deer, macaws and parrots. The enclosures are large and mimic the animals’ natural environments. While you can do a self-guided tour, the Center offers free guided tours. These are subject to availability, so you need to reserve in advance by phone or by email. Visitor fees, gift shop purchases and donations help support the foundation’s work. The center isn’t huge but if you’re in the area for rafting or waterfalls, it’s certainly worth a stop. The cats are fed at 2:30pm so that’s a good time to visit to see them active. Bring water and bug spray. Visit their website to learn more about the important work they do at the Rescue Center and sanctuary to save wildlife and educate the public: www.centrorescatelaspumas.org.

Sightseeing/Shopping

If you do the river boat cruise in Palo Alto, on the way back return through Guaitil (Wy-teel) to look at the Chorotega pottery completely handmade by local artisans. You don’t have to buy anything. The local potters are happy to show their work and demonstrate the centuries old methods they still use today to produce these unique pots. But if you are looking for an authentic handcrafted souvenir, this is a great addition to your itinerary. We stopped at Artisan Mono Congo Loco on the town square/soccer field. (I was looking for broken pots for our garden and figured a pottery shop beside a soccer field might be a good place to look.) We met Junior and Miguel Leal. They spoke no English and we spoke little Spanish, but it didn’t matter. Junior gave us a demo of how they make the Chorotega pots, which was really interesting. And I purchased two broken pots, which you’ll see at the house: one at the front entry; one in the back yard. We also negotiated for the pot that is in the downstairs bathroom. I honestly don’t remember exactly what we paid but it wasn’t the sticker price. And it was much less expensive than what you’ll pay in the souvenir stores. There are quite a few artisan “shops” in town. They aren’t what you’d expect. Many are just sheds or lean-to’s attached to houses. So walk around town and see what you discover.

Looking for a beautiful sunset? Just a short walk away, sunset views from Potrero Bay are always pretty, what with all the little islets in the distance and the headland of Flamingo off to the southwest. But if you have a vehicle you can get those views with some coastline grandeur. There's a pull off on the Las Catalinas road just between Playas Azucar and Prieta where you'll have incredible vistas as the sun sinks below the waves. Lots of people stop here at the end of the day so get there early to get a good spot and be “tranquillo” if you’re ready to leave but your car is blocked in.

Snorkelling

You can always head out into the water at any beach and see some marine life, but you’ll have better luck in areas where there is structure, either reefs or rocks. Be aware that if the weather has been windy, visibility may be poor. And be cautious if the water is rough or the wind strong, especially if you’re snorkelling around rocks or shallow reefs. The best bet for good snorkelling is to take a boat trip. And it’s a great way to spend the day too. The best snorkelling in the area is out at Islas Catalinas, a few miles offshore. Most of the tour operators offer snorkelling trips.

Surfing & Boogie Boarding

Nearby Playa Flamingo can be pretty fun for boogie boarding if the conditions are right. But the best beaches, both for surfing and boogie boarding are Playas Grande, Tamarindo, Avellanas and Negra. (And bonus: on the way to Tamarindo you’ll find Mordo’s, the best fish and chips in the area.) You can rent boogie boards from Special Place for $15/day or $80/week. A surfboard rental will run you about $25/day and they are available from most surf shops in the area. Some will offer shorter rental terms too.

Fishing

If you want great fishing look no further. You can join the local fisherman down at the beach and just toss in a line or a net or take a fishing charter for some amazing inshore and offshore fishing right here along Playa Flamingo, Playa Potrero and around the Catalinas Islands archipelago. You can catch tuna, marlin, roosterfish, jack and many others.

Hidden Beaches

There are also some beaches you can only reach by boat. Ask Special Places to arrange a boat trip to explore the coast of the area and maybe do some snorkelling if that interests you. It’s a beautiful coastline full of little islands with lots of hidden beaches.

ATV rides

An ATV ride is a fun way to spend a few hours exploring areas you can't access by car. There are quite a few ATV tour operators in the area. I recommend asking Special Places for a recommendation. Ask for tours that stay mostly on trails or the beach. Be aware, depending on the time of year these can be very dusty rides. Companies usually provide goggles, but you might want to cover your face with a bandana as well.
